It's a bit silly to compare taking a day off for a game with taking it off to watch sport. A match is only gonna happen once, the game will always be there. I don't see why you'd need to take a day off to play it.
The match can be recorded, and all of the best highlights can most likely be found on youtube. In this great age of technology, your logic fails.
Watching a recording isn't the same as watching it live.
And playing a game the next weekend isn't the same as playing it on the midnight launch, and feeling like you're the first one to get to see the things you're seeing.
But isn't this about taking the day off to play it at home or am I missing something.

In theory... I rarely take all of my annual leave, so I see no reason why it'd be a problem to use a day of it to play a new release game that I really wanted. In practice, though, I don't think I would.

No. My philosophy has always been work first, playtime when you're done. Plus, I don't buy many games, so it's not like I have any real temptation.

Well, the OP was talking about taking a day off of work to play a new game as soon as you can. I just assumed that he meant going to the midnight launch, and then taking the next day off, so that he could play the game as much as he wanted, and no have to come into work all groggy and sleep deprived.
Well yeah that's understandable but if it's nothing special then what's the point?

I work and go to school full-time. If I want to day one day out of the year to just relax and play a game, then I'm going to do it. But this should definitely not become a regular occurrence.

I voted that it's ok if you take annual leave. As long as you submit it and get it approved, then you're free to do whatever you want. Annual leave is yours to do whatever the fuck you want with it.

As for what I do, I've only taken 1 day off for a game, and that was so I could go to the midnight launch of Black Ops with my brother and a mate. Apart from that I rarely take time off and usually just visit a shop during my lunch break to pick up a game on release.

No. If you respect your work, employer(s) and coworker(s), you wouldn't do such a thing. There is time for work, and time for play, and both should be balanced. Who are you to decide your hobby is more important than getting work done, when you know very well there will be time enough for that hobby?

I've never done it personally, but I wouldn't have problem with people who do.

It's your time. Spend as you wish.

My personal option - I wouldn't just because I don't want to - isn't there.

I have no issues with anyone taking their holiday for playing a game - it's time off, and it's yours to do with as you please. Some people book time off just for a break from work, even if they aren't doing anything in particular - imo it's pretty much the same as that.

If you're not sick, you shouldn't be taking sick leave ^^.

Some things aren't the same - launch day on MMOs is usually quite different than most of the time, though it's not something I've ever felt like I've missed.

Lots of companies in the US no longer differentiate between sick and vacation days. It's all PTO - paid time off. You spend your PTO anyway you want. It could be for sick leave, vacation, family emergency, child care issues or even just because you don't want to go to work one day. It's up to the worker and their boss to be responsible and not take a day off at a bad time at work when it can be helped, but beyond that the attitude is it's your time and you can spend it any way you want. My last PTO day was because it was cold out and I didn't feel like getting dressed and leaving the house and my boss was fine with that. I'm salaried though and regularly work lots of nights and weekends, that might make a difference.

It's not right but I have done it 2 or 3 times in the last decade. It's never a good idea to start a new game half an hour before you were planning on going to sleep on a Sunday night...

"I'll just take a quick look at this... ...oh crap, is it morning already?"

as ajimbo already pointed out, different people have different tastes, and i find it a waste of time to take a sick day to watch a sport, thats what tivo is for (now this is according to your logic against playing games during the day)

I've done it in the past and will probably do it Friday. Now, I'd never take unpaid time off to do it cause that's just dumb and if I can't really spare the sick/vacation time, I wouldn't do it either. That said, I have about 6 months of sick time and almost 7 weeks of vacation saved up so Friday, should work not be all crazy, will see me use a day of that time for some WoW:Cata time.

I know some of my guild mates have and will take an entire week just play. I find that a bit nuts but more power to them.

i dont think i have ever taken a day off for a game. I actually had a sick day near the release of GTA san andreas and people thought that i took it off to play a game. but i was actually traveling 2-3 hours both ways to see a specialist. i was anooyed that people thought that of me.

i was considering taking time off for cataclysm but i got fire so it sorted its self out lol

but yeah i would only take annual leave or time in lieu to play a game or anything else. im dont think its a good idea to chuck a sickie to get a day off.
