Is it just me, or does the term "gamer" annoy anybody else? I can't quite fully articulate what I don't like about it, but I guess it annoys me because it seems like anybody who has touched anything remotely related to games is automatically labeled a gamer, and is assumed to be part of some quirky social order, as if there is some "Gamer HQ" where people dressed up as Gordon Freeman and Mario plot to take over the world./quote]

But the term gamer and it's usual 'Hardcore' preface are self appointed.
No malevolent outside force is attaching a label to you and your hobby because they simply don't care enough to do so.

I despise the term because it is a symptom of the barriers that a lot of video game enthusiasts throw up around the pass time.

Also, how cool would it be if Gordon Freeman and Mario took over the world?
That is AWESOME. I wish there was a Gamer HQ...
ANYWAY!
I don't mind it so much, labels are labels, everyone has one. (Popular, Nerd, business man, gamer...You get it, right?)
Although I don't label people based on things other than gender and sometimes race(and that's only for school stuff, like about slavery and whatnot), I suppose if it gives people peace of mind, go right on ahead and call me that.

Labels very generally don't bother me. I fit my perception of the gamer tag, so if I was annoyed by the label I'd clearly have to re-examine my lifestyle. And I'm not prepared to do that.

Being labeled a "student athlete" DOES bug me though. My university doesn't pay me squat to be on the Fencing team, so in my book I'm a student with an athletic hobby. My fencing team isn't even in the NCAA for crying out loud

I just don't like when people who aren't gamers say they are. If the last game you played was Pong then you're not a gamer. I made a pot once in art class, that doesn't make me a potter!

"Gamer" is way too stereotypical. As others have said, it implies heavily that you play either Halo or World of Warcraft.

And for being called a gamer, I don't mind. Hell I see it as a badge of honor.
