Poll: The Wizard of Oz: Overrated?

Let me start by saying that I don't think The Wizard of Oz is bad. I like it, but I think people give it WAY too much credit. Now, let me explain a bit.

Firstly, the acting. Yes, I know people seem to think Judy Garland was great in this role, but in my opinion, she over acted EVERYTHING. She didn't make me believe that she was Dorthy, she made me believe that she was someone trying to act like Dorthy. She just seemed to be trying WAY too hard, and it showed badly. A lot of the actors overacted in this movie, but many of them I could at least believe up to a point. Not Judy.

Now, let's discuss the ending. Now, think for a minute. In all the movies ever, what is the biggest slap in the face of an ending? The dream sequence. Of course. The dream sequence is when the main character wakes up in a bed and realizes that the whole movie was a dream. What's really upsetting about this ending is that it gives you the feeling that nothing was accomplished. Since it was a dream, all of what happened is irrelevant. Basically, you spent the whole movie watching the main character get some beauty sleep. Besides, no one wants a good movie to end like that! They prefer an ending that restores the status quo, and ends things well. The dream sequence is just a lazy ending that can be put onto the end of anything.

With that being said, how did The Wizard of Oz end? Dream sequence. Of course. To me, this ending was sub-par at best. It just wasn't satisfying at all. She misses the balloon, and you really feel like she'll never get him, and then she realizes that the magic slippers can take her home. What appears to be a Deus Ex Machina just ends up as the equivalent of a bucket of cold water dumped on your head.

Now, the ending is the most important part of the movie! It can make a decent movie great (Cars), or an average movie poor (National Treasure 2). Without a good ending, I find it hard to call this movie one of the best movies of all time. With that being said, as I previously said, I do not think the Wizard of Oz is bad. I think it's a good movie, but has WAY too much hype surrounding it. It isn't nearly as good as people make it out to be, and its status at the time of release has followed it a bit too well. You may say I'm too young to truly appreciate it, but I think I'm just old enough to see through the Nostalgia and see the movie for what it truly is.

So, what do you think? Is the movie overrated, or do you think I'm an idiot and that it truly deserves it's place as one of the greatest movies of all time? Please, speak your mind, this isn't me just trolling, I really want to hear some people passionate about this movie talk about it in depth.

P.S. I will say this, anybody that makes a special effect for a tornado using a stocking is hardcore.

Of course the Wizard of Oz is overrated.

It's overrated for the same reasons that I always say that H.P. Lovecraft is overrated. That's because historically it played a really important role, and film today would not be what it was without the Wizard of Oz, just as horror today wouldn't be what it is today without Lovecraft. That said, people have since built on the groudwork laid by previous artists, and as a result their work, if compared outside of a historical framework, is superior in my opinion. That doesn't mean that these works can't be appreciated in a historical context, it just means that if you take them out of that context they lose a lot of their appeal.

One of the main points of the film is that she learns to appreciate where she comes from. In both the film and the book Kansas is grey and empty while Oz is colourful and exciting. The characters in Kansas are mundayne as opposed to the eccentric ones of Oz.

Despite this she realises 'there's no place like home', the dream makes complete sense as a plot device in it's context.

Yeah it's over rated. But it was still a great story. I wonder how it became so popular in the first place though.

Yes, it is overrated.
And so is The Beatles.

Also, Seinfeld is unfunny. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny]

The Wizard of Oz was originally actually a satire on the Great Depression. I'll have to find the BBC article which explained it all in detail...anyway, that's not the point.

I do think that perhaps these things always are overrated, perhaps it's just that now we're used to better cameras and sound quality etc...

No, it's great. The songs are lovely, the acting is good, and sure, Judy Garland is a little over-the-top, but you know, everybody seem to have som much fun with their roles that it doens't matter. A great film!

It was the first movie to be shot in color so I'm guessing that may be why it's a little over-rated also many people are exposed to it at a young age so a childhood memory perhaps? Though I personally think it's just average. Lastly I don't see a problem with a dream ending nothing is as mentioned before it makes sense in the plot and to my knowledge this was one of the first really big movies to use it. Overall though I agree it's over-rated.

The thing is, The Wizard of Oz used the "it was all a dream" premise BEFORE it was a cliche.

Anyway, I haven't really since the movie since I was a young kid, so I can't really comment beyond that.

Hey, exactly what I was thinking. Isn't TV Tropes the best?

OT: This movie was made in 1939. I don't think that the dream sequence was used very much before then, making this ending quite original for the time. Unless I'm mistaken because I don't watch Depression and prior era movies that much.

Yeah, but I'm one of those people who really loves the thought of a fantasy setting, so every time in a movie they say "Whoops, dream sequence, the fantasy world doesn't really exist, sorry!" It's like a leg grows out of the TV screen and kicks me right in the 'nads.

Not that there's anything wrong with reality. Hell, my favorite movie of all time is The Shawshank Redemption.

But I guess my point is, even though she learned that lesson in the end, it still felt like it was almost a waste of time. She even partially learned the "There's no place like home" thing at the beginning with the man she was hanging out with. There could have been tons of better ways to end the movie other than that.

First color movie...

I guess they set the industry standard for everything you watch today.

And yes, I enjoyed the movie, it's a fun one to watch. Tin Man is also another Oz universe movie I really liked. Return to Oz sucked.

It was made in '39, of course it's not going to be as popular as today's movies.

Whatever people say, it's one of my favorite films of all time, a great movie.

I think it's good if you're into that sort of thing... I can see why people like it but it's not my cup of tea.
