As much as we all dearly love The Escapist's one and only Yahtzee, I've always wondered where on earth did he get his nickname from.

After visiting his sight and playing some of his own AGS games, most of which the plot is so fantastic that I can't wait to solve the stupid puzzle with the porcelain body parts, and so I cave into my weakness and go google search a walkthrough and feel guilty about that while I immensely enjoy the plot.

Anyways, my point is that after seeing the end credits for Yahtzee?s games, which he has been making for a good number of years now, I saw that he is always ?Ben ?Yahtzee? Croshaw

In all my crazed fandom of Yahtzee I haven't seen anything to remind me of the famous dice game.

Edit:

Someone in the replies after me gave me a link to a Yahtzee less Ben Croshaw production.
It's an online comic called Yahtzee takes on the World. where the main character Yahtzee, loosely based on Ben Croshaw's own personality tries to take over the world.

So my new theory is that Yahtzee TOTW was his first major online contribution (references to high school) and so when he needed a forum/user/IGN he used yahtzee after his character. Or his comic strip was what he was known for, so people gave it to him as a nick name. Or he used it to remind people of his character. Whatever that reason it still came from a comic he drew in highschool. Just like my user name does (I hand drew that picture of the Manga cat)

Why he named his main comic character yahtzee. I still have no clue.

Maybe it's more of a reference to uhhh... idk... using the phrase 'Yahtzee' like we use WOOT.

Maybe when he was in Jr. High he had a crazy Yahtzee fetish... no that's not right... maybe he ran a craps game and called it Yahtzee to fool all the parents into thinking their preteens were doing something wholesome.

Maybe it has some British connotation that I can't catch onto because I'm just about as American as Apple Pie (although I do agree Bush has made some whopping mistakes, and says some funny misquotes).

Does anyone know where the mysterious nick name for the funniest game reviewer came from?
Or does anyone have any theories???
I want to know... badly
(yes I am a huge Yahtzee fan... how huge? you don't want to know...)

Well Yahtzee is a very fast and furious game of dice that makes little sense at all. When you do good you scream out YAHTZEE and then your good on your way to winning.

Maybe he saw a link between this fast game and his fast talking speed.

or maybe he just likes the name, who cares?

:EDIT: I fixed some typing errors

Actually, he made a web comic a few years ago that explained it at some point, http://yahtzee.comicgenesis.com/

I doubt its actually the reason from "Yahtzee takes on the world" but its a great explanation anyways.

I think his nickname is yahtzee because he always wins... or... something like that...

Perhaps it's because it is a game that requires the ability to add up, and know when to use certain combinations? I mean, he might just hate GURPS or D&D and feel left out of the dice playing community.

D&D does suck though...

As most nicknames, I dont think he choose it himself. Most nicknames comes from friends, calling you things because of something you've done or said. He have mentioned before, that he has friends, or at least a roommate, so maybe he did something stupid while drunk or something, and got the name.

In Yahtzee saves the world he is talking about losing his memory and not even being able to remeber his name so he decides to name himself after the first thing he hears which is Yatzee (actually that's like the third thing he hears but he ignores the first 2)

It's Yahtzee takes on the world, btw, and he hears 'Ben' roughly forty million times, until someone says Yahtzee. And I like the option 'It's British for something'. I assure you it isn't.

It could be worse, he could call himself Branston Pickle

(moral: Yahtzee really likes his Branston Pickle)

Yeah but he could have made the webcomic and then a friend started calling him Yahtzee >_>

or like the De-Rez video...he gets drunk and yells 'yahtzee' a lot, then proceeds to run naked into forests and do horrible (or sexy) things to animals....

The game or the person? I'd be kinda scared if I were Yahtzee right now.

I think Yahtzee called himself Yahtzee because Yahtzee is a very annoying word to type. Yahtzee called himself Yahtzee to annoy others when they talked about Yahtzee. If I have to type 'Yahtzee' once more I think I'll break my fingers and it will be all Yahtzee's fault. Ow!

Besides, wouldn't the easiest way to work this out be to simply ask him. Then again, knowing the speed at which he can speak I wouldn't be surprised if he could tell you ten reasons why you don't want to know the answer before you could even say 'hello.'

i always thought that it was because you have to say yathzee really fast in the game and because ben talks so fast they refered him to yathzee. But apparently it is because of the comics he made.

Yahtzee was also a character in reality on the norm don't know if that interests you and your crazy yahtzee fetish.
