nope, sure it's an attention getter.

but if they're flaunting tits on the cover to get your attention, it's probably shit anyway

Not only have I never bought a game because it had tits on the cover but I've actually avoided buying games I might otherwise have been interested in because it had tits on the cover.

I like games that demonstrate enticing character art on the cover, both male and female.

I was unsold on TERA because of the overt sexuality of the advertising.

Tip: If you want to use sex to sell a game, use it in the context of the game! DON'T try cheaply imitating a Porn Shot.

Now honestly, I can't say that sex in games bothers me, though. If it's a part of the game, then it's a part of the game. If handled well and handled maturely, I think sex can help make a game better. I don't think it should be a selling point, however. Even as a teen, I bought games based upon how much fun I thought I'd have, rather than how many ridiculously proportioned women in skimpy clothes were on the cover/in the game.
Oh, I'm not saying sex shouldn't be in the game because it just has no place in the medium. I'm just saying it bothers me because it just looks so awkward. The animations are always terrible.
This is true, the animations do look a bit wonky. Apologies for the misunderstanding, however. I wasn't trying to say you thought sex had no place in the medium. I don't think I'd want to actually watch sex in a game, though. I'd still be fine if there wasn't any to begin with, honestly. If I wanted to watch sex that badly, I'd just go find some porn. But that's just me.

Still a teenager here, I don't actually, it annoys me when they expect us to pay attention because of boobs. I've actually started avoid being interested in a game that has ridiculous cover art unless i've heard good things about it before.

No I have never bought a game because there were breasts on the cover art. I like breasts...they are pleasantly shaped, and soft, and warm, and...*ahem* sorry where was I?

Ahh yes, no breasts do not influence weather i buy a game or not, weather the games is any good influences my game buying decisions.

***EDIT***

Post 666, post of the beast xD

Porn is restricted to the confines of reality, and the "actors" and sets scrounged up by the director.

Video Games, especially Fantasy, can be anything. Chick with tits is boring. Chick with tits getting laid is boring. Chick with tits fighting legendary beasts, dashing over spectacular landscapes, and dancing naked on top of a mailbox right in the middle of town... now THAT'S interesting!

Covers like that get my attention. So I guess it's a marketing success.

I've never bought a game because of it's cover though. I do research on all my games before purchase.

For the record, the sexy cover of a video game has never caused me to research the game for later purchase.

But it's not as effective when the only place it exists is in your mind. If you can program it into an interactive virtual world you can actually see and play around with, it becomes a LOT more meaningful.

That kind of stuff has actively pushed me away from at least 1,000% more games than it has pulled me toward. It's the sole reason I didn't play Bayonetta, for example.

I find it analogous to fart jokes. Low brow, vapid; for more sophisticated tastes they can usually have the reverse effect of raising a frown. You get used to having to put up with at least a few of them from pretty much every comedian; but if an act is going to be 90% fart jokes, then not only is it not entertaining, but you also simply don't want to be grouped with the kind of idiots that'd lap that stuff up.

Also, I believe this can top the trend in the last thread of the escalating 'armour' references for Tera:

No, I buy mainly PC games, so that's digital distribution

Maybe I've clicked something, but I don't think I've ever burned money on something because of breasts.

Whenever I see really big boobs, it just makes me think of an ex girlfriend who won't talk to me anymore. I just start whimpering and I walk away in a Charlie Brown-esque fashion. She was wonderful.

basically...

The box art of a given game has very little effect on me, other than to insult or not insult my intelligence... and insulting box art has never kept me from buying a game, nor has beautiful, non-insulting box art caused me to buy a game. I've honestly never understood how pushy advertising and hype actually manage to appeal to people.

Also, there are these littles thing called gameplay demonstrations...
As someone who works in internet/cable sales, I can safely say your little graph there is a perfect representation of what I see with coworkers. I strive to be the guy on the left, low pressure, helpful, and friendly, while at least one of my co-salesmen is the guy on the right. He may still get numbers, but he has a lot more pissed off customers than I ever do.

The controversial tits and ass everywhere in Tera peaked my interest.

But I only played because I heard it was fun, I promise.

Is there an option for a guy who doesn't like going to his local game store and kinda just avoids the whole Hoha and only see the box art after the box arrives in the mail?
:p I guess the closest option would be #2, since the breasts are neither a selling point nor can they get your attention if you see them for the first time AFTER you've got the game.

I can't remember the last time I bought any game just on instinct, but I will admit that a little skin can get me to give the game a look over.

If I see "soft-core porn" on a video game box art, more than anything it would put me off buying that game because I immediately think that the developers/marketers have the wrong focus.
And I can't say I go to actual stores much (though I suppose the same principle would apply online), but generally games which have any sort of sexually provocative cover art are vastly inaccurate portrayals of the actual game - a discrepancy indicative of various other poor design choices.

On a side note, the most motivating box art I've seen in the past few years is undoubtedly...

Now that's good box art. ;)
