As per usual I made an ass of myself in the thread. this time it was The Green Inferno review. as I was writing out of my own ass I became strangely fascinated with it and I thought it would make a good discussion.

I personally hate his movie, I think they represent everything wrong with horror, form annoying characters, bad writing and violence I find more laughable then scary but there's a lot of people who absolutely love him even Stephen King praise his latest movie on twitter. I kinda want to know the appeal?

So what do you think of the Eli Roth's movies?

p.s.(please don't bring politics into this because of his latest movie.)

I had to pick great because good isn't an option. I've enjoyed all the films he's directed.

Pretty much this. His movies may not be masterpieces, but by god are they entertaining.

I just hope Knock, Knock will be entertaining as the rest of his films.

His best movie will always be Cabin Fever though

Pure gold.

I think he's Zack Snyder's much less talented and juvenile little brother. And given that I'm not that much of a fan of Snyder...

I've enjoyed some of his flicks. When I first saw Hostel I got a kick out of the cathartic revenge stuff. And Cabin Fever was fun too.

EDIT: A middle of the road option on your poll might have been what I chose, like "Not Bad" or "He has been behind some decent Horror Fare". But as it is, it's too polarized for me.

To me he's like Tarantino; he's made a few good movies, a bunch I don't care for, and all my peers seem to think he's a God of modern cinema (more so for Tarantino). I really don't care for most of either of their stuff.

Who?

Wait... so The Bear Jew from Inglorious Basterds directs movies? How 'bout that.

Looks like utter schlock.

Same here. I think he is a good director. Cabin Fever was an entertaining horror movie. Some people praise it, but I just think it was good. Hostel definitely had a big impact on the modern horror genre, more specifically the torture-porn sub-genre.

So, he's a good director, but not a genius or anything like that.

I hated that movie except for:
1: That scene
2: Naked Cerina Vincent
3: And this scene, which I consider one of the funniest 'bait-and-switch' moments I've ever seen in a movie.

Yeah, you're poll options are mostly crap, with only "he's a god" or "he's utter shit" being ones that actually reflect on our opinions of the guy. So I'm not bothering to actually answer your poll itself.

My response of him would be "meh", he's ok. I haven't seen all of his work, mostly because I don't find those types of movies all the entertaining. But I like Hemlock Grove for the most part, and I think I liked 1 movie that he did. He's not great, but he's certainly not the worst director out there, not by far.

I probably won't watch The Green Inferno because I'm not a fan of Cannibal Holocaust/Ferox movies.

That being said, both Hostel and Cabin Fever were a lot of fun.
He's also OK as an actor, especially given the type of movies he appears in.

You can possibly maybe get a good horror movie from him if he's producing, like Clown. But he puts out a lot of flicks and most of them are unwatchable. Like Robert Rodriguez, he's perfectly capable of putting out good stuff but likes his own bullshit too much for his own good.

I'm aware of him, but he directs the kind of movie I just don't personally enjoy (only 'slasher' movies I've really liked were the original Halloween, Dale & Tucker vs Evil and the Cabin in the Woods).

It sounds like he's good at what he does, but its not stuff I want to see.

I don't feel much for him one way or another. I've seen (quick glance through IMDB) one of his movies. I've never been a huge consumer of blood-and-guts horror.

I will say that directing a trailer for Grindhouse does, at least, suggest that he doesn't take himself too seriously, and that while I may not be a particularly strong audience for his work, I'm not sorry that he makes it.
