Eh... I don't care... I'm sure Minecraft: Live & Reloaded and/or Minecraft: Nuts & Bolts would be met with as much expectation as me caring about the Minecraft brand in general...

Oh wait... If Microsoft ever wanted to do a Smash-based game the same way Sony did, kinda, then at least they got a new IP to put in the game...

It's entirely too early to tell. We'll see in the coming months and years if/how Microsoft changes Minecraft and affects the massive community they've built.

I think it's great. Minecraft is evidence that you can make it as an independent developer. Selling it for such a large sum of money... While great for the Minecraft team, it also sends that message. Besides: Microsoft isn't that bad... Well; we've got the Xbone and stuff, but we don't know for sure Minecraft will be ruined. It was its own product, after all, and it had a good run already. Is Minecraft a huge game? I don't think so... Not at this point in time. But is IS iconic. We'll see what the future brings, of course, but I'm currently all in favour of this move. And as I don't play Minecraft: I have nothing to lose on the subject. :p

Over time, Minecraft has attracted a very young audience. I bought it in alpha and played it for 3-4 years form then on like a crazy addiction. The community back then, and the community now is a very changed place! It feels to me MS wants to attract the younger gamers that picked up minecraft in the later days I've been noticing so that they grow up on the xbone. A very smart business decision for them, but I feel bad for hardcore xbox fans who have to deal with a larger group of youngins spilling over into their other games. Since most parents stick their kids on one console.

Considering Notch never entered this with the intent of becoming a full-blown superstar as well as his lack of the kind of saintly patience and foot-thick armor plated skin required to deal with ANY fanbase on the internet, I'm not surprised at all and encourages this sale. Certainly there's a big risk for what might happen with Minecraft now and yet it came, it did what it set out to do and even if Minecraft becomes monetized to the level of insanity, there's a thousand more games out there ready to step up and take its place.

Honestly Minecraft is one game that I can only see benefitting from Microsoft takeover. The game under Mojang was plagued with lethargic and low-quality updates. It would be really, really hard to ruin the core system and it lends itself well to bells and whistles.

This is just on game quality, though, don't know if it will sell.

I don't really know. On the one hand, I'm worried that Microsoft will ruin Minecraft and all of Mojang. On the other... Well, I really wouldn't be that against a Minecraft 2, made with a proper engine. Sadly though, I think if that came about there would be a whole bunch of poor choices made and my dream of a 'Minecraft, exactly as it is but not running like shit and with all those features you really wanted' wouldn't happen.

That said, I haven't really played Minecraft in a while and I've never played any other Mojang games, although I've been meaning to get back into playing Minecraft again. There's a small chance I'll get my dream game, but other than that this doesn't really affect me.

Who even cares? Minecraft is overrated trash, there are many other good games on the market.
People who don't share that opinion might conceivably care. Of course, the amount of Minecraft-esques out there does work a bit like a safety net. If Microsoft scuttles the whole thing, there will no doubt be somewhere else to go.

That's all fine and dandy, but what is the obsession with Minecraft? I have the PC version, but I barely play it.

Again, that is your own opinion on the game. You don't like it (and I can frankly see why, it's not much on its own) and that is perfectly fine. Other people do.

Hell, people can't get enough of either Sonic or Mario, for some reason. There will always be titles where you can't see what on earth it is that other people see in it.

I'm tentatively optimistic. From the sounds of it Notch was itching to go off and pursue other projects anyway, as he had never envisioned Minecraft getting so ridiculously popular. As long as the game is still there, the servers are kept up, and the original team is on hand to fix bugs, it should be business as usual and hopefully the average player won't even notice the transition.

The Doomsday scenario would be Microsoft shoving the game chock-full of microtransactions, horribly altering the character of the game by "improving" it with HD models and textures, and so on. But they wouldn't be that stupid... would they? If we know one thing, Microsoft like money. Money comes from happy consumers. You make consumers happy by not pissing them off. I just hope MS understand the Minecraft userbase well enough to not make any ridiculous moves that they then have to hastily backpedal from.

As a kid, did you ever get engrossed for hours in building Lego structures?

That's pretty much the draw Minecraft has. It's not *meant* to be an action-packed triple-A Baysplosion extravaganza with an Oscar-winning plot, part of the appeal is that it's "boring" (subdued would be more accurate) and the player is essentially free to do what they want. It's as much a sandbox/toolbox simulation as it is a game. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but plenty of people get pretty engrossed in it.

This may be a huge mistake on Microsoft's part. Minecraft is beginning it's descent into the shadows of the gaming world. That is, of it's original player base, no one is playing it anymore.

Then again there is always 100k more eight year old kids willing to buy it even though it's circling the drain. Minecraft has an infinite play base. It appeals to the most impulsive player base in gaming, and thus, will forever be immortal. OR so it seems....
