I have the first 3 Metal Gear Solid games and I love their story lines. It's deep, dark gritty materials about war being fought behind enemy lines. I have to say that Psycho Mantis and Sniper Wolf are some of the most memorable bosses in gaming history (at least for me!).
Psycho, Mantis? You mean that guy that took any last bit of credibility that game had? The guy that took my ability to take the game seriously and therefore care about the plot behind the shed and blew its brains out with a shotgun? And then tossed the body in a wood chipper? And then fed the wood chipper scraps to wild dog? And then waited for the dog to shit, which was then lit on fire, and the ashes were taken and put on a rocket ship which was launched into a distant star, which then promptly fell into a black hole? That Pyscho Mantis? That guy just annoyed me, personally.

MGS2 was my last go at this franchise. Probably ever -- I came for the Snake not for the Raiden so that story line twist kinda ruined the game for me. Old Snake doesn't really have the draw either. I truly enjoyed the first half of MGS2 -- overall I thought the game play was short because of the exposition being taken over by cut scene after cut scene after cut scene. The story is decent when looked at from afar, but it can get confusing down at any level of detail. Sort of like a stipple-dot painting. :)

Wow, this has been necro'd a few times, it was first made in 09!

Why do people say convoluted like it's a bad thing? It's better to be convoluted than, well, just about every other game out there, with the mario-esk simplicity.

Love me some MGS, in fact I just downloaded MGS 1 last night. That game would be sweet with a HD make over!

LOL everyone is just hating on Raiden because he got stripped Naked and Snake Didn't XD

Meh MGS2 was still pretty fun despite playing as whiny Raiden....who will soon have his own BAD ASS GAME

Meh alot of people who might hate on the story probably can't stand how the Story is so puzzling and pieced together in the fashion it is.

It only goes to prove that the Majority of the gaming Population has ADD. I know Yahtzee may not like how the story goes, but BLAH to him on the subject of MGS.

But over all the Metal Gear Solid storyline has proved to be one of the must enduring and most interesting in this generation of gaming and there will never be another one like it.

and with that I leave you all with this Message from Liquid Ocelot!!

I actually really like it, but that's probably because I've jumped into the series at MGS2, played MGS3 and don't have the next-gen or previous-gen hardware to play either 1 or 4.

The storyline of MGS2 and how it slowly degenerated into insanity half way through, the way that Kojima broke the fourth wall in the final sequence in 2 and how in a certain boss battle in 3 he gave you a outside the box solution were all works of genius.

Not many games seem to give the level of player immersion that the MGS series does.

It's just a pity that voice acting isn't exactly stellar (see MGS2 after the sniper escort. Only cutscene I can't stand. And it's all Christopher Randolph's fault).

The basic premise of the story is interesting enough. Unfortunately, the stories feature bombastic and improbable villains, and take such an absurd number of twists and turns that the practical result is a narrative mess. It works moment to moment, but the story as a whole is garbage.

No, what I don't like is the fact that the story takes arbitrary twists and turns. The premise is solid enough, but the result of the franchise plays out as a story written by a hack who repeatedly paints characters into a corner only to have a Deus Ex Machina appear at an opportune moment. Each installment just makes this sillier and sillier.

I would point out that you do your argument little service when your resort directly to fallacy in your second sentence.

It has been proven to endure certainly. I will even admit that the story (obviously) has its fans. But neither of these points demonstrates that the story is intrinsically interesting. If we step way back and look at a very glossed over version of the story it is interesting enough. But at the granular level, where we step through the plot point by point, the story is not interesting so much as it is baffling and arbitrary.

I've always been a big fan. Sure, sometimes things get a bit "far-out" (for lack of a better term), but that's half the fun. I thought Peace Walkers on PSP made a great addition too... really lived up to the home console games. I actually work at a company that's affiliated with Sony, and it's one of my favorites.

Convolution is the one thing a story shouldn't have. People can go on and on about how some people have ADD or just don't get it but that's the thing. Its not our job to just get it. If the author can't tell the narrative in a way that doesn't leave people scratching their heads then they as an author failed.

Kojima really needed to sit back and take a second look at some of this stuff and trim out a good bit of fluff and filler. Like I said before I like it myself but damn if it's not overwritten.

It starts off :D and becomes D: every episode we go. Why didn't we end at 4 and leave it at that forever...

I kinda sorta like it. However, I do agree with all of the people who can't get into it because it is convoluted as fuck, because it truly is. The cutscenes are also unneedingly long. I remember in MGS2, I accidentally pressed the skip button in one or two cutscenes, because I was getting pretty damn bored, and I swear, I didn't miss a damn thing. They are just so overwritten and padded to the fucking extreme.

But there's still some things I like about it. I really enjoy the characters, and how unique and well-rounded they are, and the twists can be pretty clever even if they are drowning under verbal diarrhea. It's like LOST, only less enjoyable, and more wordy. There's still some cool mysteries to keep you interested.

There are some aspects of the story that I really enjoy. Most of them show up in MGS3. However, across the entire series, the storytelling itself (regardless of the content) is pretty abysmal. It constantly seems like Hideo Kojima wants to make films, not games, and that's unfortunate because, if a lot of the cutscenes are any indication, he wouldn't be a very good film maker. The pacing is terrible and the dialogue is dripping with silly melodrama.

And that's putting aside the problems I have with depending so heavily on cutscenes to convey story in a game in general (talk about wasting the potential of the medium).

oh god, the MGS stories! probably the single most twisted, baffling, insane, ridiculous, bizarre, and enjoyable collection of fiction ever created (also heartwrenching, sometimes)! the games wouldn't be half as entertaining without them.

Oh jeez, I just got a major flashback to, like, 2003 here o_O People still hating on Raiden and calling him teh gei?? lol XD

Metal Gear Solid 2 is a postmodern masterpiece, and in my opinion one of the most masterful pieces of storytelling I've had the joy of taking part in. Kojima went into a huge experiment of constructing and then deconstructing expectations to leave the player on bare feet throughout the story(which symbolically is meant to put one in a spot where the player and Raiden are basically in the same situation).

For those that can say nothing of MGS2 but "It sucked because I had to play as Raiden, I came to play as Snake.", Kojima made you his *****, really. He was making a point about Raiden representing the fanboys of snake that MGS fans were turning into. So congratulations, he just proved you suck as much as Raiden. No, no, but really I'm exaggarating here, but I wish people would give this amazing game a chance, rather than saying "lol gay".

I made a bit of an insult that I didn't really mean up here. I will make one that I mean now. If you played Arsenal Gear around 2001 when the game came out, and that game didn't in some way either freak you out or at least impress you(for OTHER reasons than nude Raiden), you're dead inside. Sorry. You are. XD
