Poll: What MMO class do you play and why?

I have a confession to make. I am a suffering altohalic. Ever since I first started playing MMOs, I've been torn. It doesn't matter which game, what type, what style; the problem is always the same... what class should I play? I end up making one of every class (if possible) and hopping between them all equally, growing increasingly more disgusted by retreading the SAME starting zone and doing the SAME quest 6/7/8 times... and then it happens, I burn myself out on the game before I've even technically begun and then put it to rest permanently.

So, what I was hoping to gain by posing this specific question was some form of guidance or maybe a sudden rush of inspiration to roll one specific class that would be perfect for me. The problem I have is I find it incredibly hard to fit myself into one specific archetype. But on the flip side of that delima, I long for specializing in a specific class/character type. My friends know exactly what they like and always play the same type of character in whatever game they play and I envy that. So really I'm hoping something someone says here clicks with me and I'll be able to (for the first time in my MMO history) pick a main and roll with it.

Here's how the previously mentioned classes boil down in my mind and the reason behind my indecisiveness.

Warrior = Goes well with my reckless playing tendencies BUT can be boring animation wise.
Paladin = I like the self sustainability and playstyle BUT can be boring animation wise.
Rogue = I like the concept (ninjas ftw) BUT I'm way too reckless and impatient.
Mage = Love seeing all those numbers tick off of mobs BUT I'm too reckless with squishies.
Necro = LOVE the concept and aesthetics, LOVE pets BUT usually a lot to keep track of.
Hunter = LOVE archery and pets BUT can get pretty boring just shooting arrows 24/7.
Hybrid classes = Can be really cool depending on the class/game, BUT haven't tried too many.

The only MMO I've gotten into is Guild Wars 2.

I selected other - The Engineer focuses on guns, explosives, technology, turrets and robots. :D

I tend to play classes which aren't in the traditional "Warrior/Mage/Rogue" trio.

I tend to favour the melee characters but not as heavy like warrior or paladin therefore I tend to choose rouge/ thief like character. Don't ask me why, I just like to be melee but not relying so much on strength alone and I don't like to be a range magic user either.

Depends on what's available in the MMO in question, but the archetypes I prefer (from most to least favourite) are:

1. Minion/Pet-based Classes (Necromancers, Hunters)
2. Deployable-based Classes (Engineers)
3. Support/Healer Classes
4. Tank Classes

Whatever amounts to either a frontline tank-with-a-shield or a combat healer. Or even both at the same time. Not sure where that fits in that poll.
The most fun I've had playing those roles were in the Warhammer Online mmo.
Playing pvp as a Blackguard(Dark Elf tank class) and standing in front of my team to actively protect my team by diverting or absorbing damage, or protecting high-value allies by shielding them and taunting the ones attacking them, and occasionally using knockback to punt annoying enemies up in the air and into a live vulcano. Good times.

Played a few in different MMOS usually Rogues but have also done Tanks and Mages (will do a healer soon). At the moment I am playing monk in FFXIV and its prob the one I have enjoyed the most for the longest although it can be pretty challenging at least for me with all the positional requirements and procs and buffs to be maintained along with the rotations.

I picked it simply because I like Monk class in FF Tifa and Sabin are my two favourite out of this class. Likewise I also have a Dragoon alt purely because of Kain.

I just go with a class that I like and if that doesnt exist I just go with the one that looks the coolest or sounds the most interesting to me then figure it out.

The only MMO I played much was WoW. In that I played a Night Elf Warrior. I don't know why I just found it fun. And the only stereotype I had to deal with was people thinking I was good at the game.

This poll is a bit broken IMO because it doesn't really capture the common roles of most MMOs, for example by having no option for Healer type classes.

I tend to play support characters because to me an MMO is the most interesting when I have skills that people need. I like meeting new people through the demands of the game. It's just fun to make friends and connections in the game because their characters have abilities you need in your adventures, because that makes it feel like a real world to me.

Whatever lets me use the most skills cause sitting there and autoattacking all day is rather dull.

Though that can flip back on my face. A class that relies of a lot of skill usage may be entertaining to play, but it does turn into an utter chore if you gotta keep it up while grinding schmucks.

I've played alot of MMOs, but my favorite way to play is straight tank. I can protect my friends and have an endurance test with big bosses, which is something I always get a thrill from.

1. DOT class(MOAR DOTS!) because I love the concept of just standing there while my enemies drops dead in front of me.
2. Pet class, because theyre often more difficult to play effectively and I like the challenge.
3. the "fuck you tank", who focuses on basically keeping the enemy from acting rather than just parrying with their face.

In my MMO experience all of them eventually. I spent most time as a crusader for the divine light though so I'll vote paladin, although I currently play Elder Scroll Onlines rogue.. like a couple hours a week, games not that captivating (which is good).

No love for Priest/Cleric, my favourite. Shame on you, OP, for omitting one of the Trinity.
I gravitate towards support roles as DPS sounds just too boring most of the time. And I'm also quite resistant to verbal abuse so when shit hits the fan and everyone piles up on support/tank/jungle/whathaveyou I generally don't mind. I do like my healers a bit sturdier, more of the DnD Cleric than WoW Priest, so Shaman it was. Some fun has been had, but MMOs generally don't do it for me, though I've tried several.

I don't care so long as I can pump out lethal damage before my tank can even get his pants from around his ankles. Backstabber, gunslinger, fireballer, whatever the class is called, I want to hit and hit hard. Usually, though, I end up going with the mage because I've always been a fan of magic.

EverQuest/EQ2 are my main games (Well TOR for now is but more on that elsewhere....)

Main:
Human Ranger
Alts:
Barbarian (think Nord) Berserker
Half Elf Rogue/Bruiser
Troll Paladin
Dark Elf ShadowKnight
Iksar (think Argonain) Warrior/Guardian

These are the toons I have spent the most of my time on... and DOZENS more alts of various classes/races.

Mage/sorcerer/wizard usually, since I love blowing things up left right and centre, and it is an interesting challenge trying to stay just out of the way of enemy attacks with such a squishy class. I am playing a lot of Tera at the moment and sorcerers in that are a great deal of fun. I love solo fighting BAMs (Big-Ass Monsters, the developer's official term for the large minibosses scattered about the world), keeping just barely ahead of swinging weapons and teleporting out of the way at the last moment while lobbing fire and ice around.

My second preference is tied between priests and warriors, since it can be a lot of fun to be a highly mobile melee class and I do rather enjoy healing and support in a lot of games.

I usually go with melee DPS classes.

I play Dragoon as my main in FFXIV. It's the only MMO I've consistently played for a while now.

Personally its not the class but the role the class takes that interests me. I'm a DPS major in MMO's, though I started life as a tank in the old days. I ended up finding the damage mitigation too stressful, and healing too boring. I like putting big numbers up on the board and DPS was the way to go (plus I was also good at side-tanking adds, so usually went with some sort of damage soaking warrior analog). While WoW has been my mainstay for MMO's I've dipped into just about every major MMO thats been released and almost universally ended up with a DPS analog. I've even had near total party wipes at the end stage of a boss only to miraculously get the last few points of damage in and mitigate the boss' damage long enough to finish the encounter.
I like being that guy.
