Yaw! I've been having this fight with two of my friends like a mega geek, whats your say on the subject?
Narrow the subject down a bit, which of the two is the better fantasy novel.
There, now...GO

Lord of The Rings. There is absolutely no contest for me whatsoever.

LOTR is way out of HP's league.

I'm really surprised this was even a question. Lord of The Rings was essentially the foundation for the majority of modern fantasy novels.

LotR is better as a novel, as a film and as a franchise... Robert Jordan or Terry Pratchett are the only authors in the same class as JRRT...

My avatar can answer that question. I do like Harry Potter as well, just not as much. Also, VS. threads are not really welcome....

If you go by the box office, Harry Potter (Harry Potter is the highest grossing film series worldwide as of June 2010. Lord of the Rings is 4th).

My personal opinion? Lord of the Rings. Sauron > Voldemort

CLARIFICATION: I like Lord of the Rings better than I like Harry Potter.

I much liked the Lord of the Rings films better.

I liked reading Harry Potter more though.

Still, I think Lord of the Rings wins.

LotR by far but HP is significantly easier to read so its fanbase will be bigger....although certainly not smarter.

Harry Potter- loved by kids and will be forgotten in a few years

Lord of the Rings- One of the greatest works of fiction ever written and all but created the modern fantasy genre.

Without Harry potter there would be no Harry Potter.

Without LOTR there would be no- DnD, Warhammer (and Warhammer 40.000 by extension), Warcraft, pretty much every fantasy series ever.

Lord of the Rings wins by far. Harry Potter feels too childish to really compete, Lord of the Rings has so many amazing quotes and is so much more epic in every single way.

They're different. Lord of the Rings is generally better in terms of the world it makes and writing, but Harry Potter has far more human characters.

Lord of the Rings. But you can't really compare the two. Without LotR you wouldn't even have Harry Potter. Tolkien was a genius. The world he created was much vaster and deeper than whatever you've got in Harry Potter. Harry Potter was enjoyable, sure, and easier to read - I also preferred the characters because they were more flawed and easy to relate to, but the series is still not the literary masterpiece that is the Lord of the Rings.

It isn't really even a question. Lord of the Rings is better by far. The world, story, and peoples are much more thought out and developed.

Thanks guys! Just looking for some strong points with which to hammer away at the brain dead mass of Harry Potter fans assaulting me for siding with the clear winner
