Poll: What's your favourite game

- in Glorious Black & White!
Jun 22, 2009
Having failed to establish any connection between the poll options and the actual question, I hereby choose to answer the question:

My favorite game is the original Grandia. A cartoonish but immersive JRPG epic, Grandia takes a refreshing break from the tried and tired 'moody douchebag gets roped into saving the world' formula.

Instead, we get the story of young adventurer Justin, a happy and optimistic go-getter whose motivation for leaving his hometown and traveling the world is nothing more than a simple desire to explore new lands. (Of course, Justin does run afoul of a bunch of sinister military folks whose supreme commander may not have everybody's best interests at heart...)

Grandia may look simple, but it is incredibly well made. The combat system, in particular, is hailed to this day as one of the best ever developed. The graphics are... Primitive, but work well (and actually look better than those of contemporary Final Fantasy VII!) The story, while comical in tone, is more than capable of delivering serious drama and suspense when it needs to.

And the music is amazing.

Grandia originally came out for the Sega Genesis EDIT: Saturn and was later ported to the PS1. It is available now on PSN, and I highly recommend it!

But seriously, the game, to me, is more awesome than it looks from a glance on top of recommending it more times than I could count...

Well... It's good at what it does. I'll give it that.

I'd probably be easier to answer how to solve world hunger for me than to name one game that I love above all the rest. Sorry, bro. You're getting a short list.

The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion- First game I think I ever was addicted to. A twenty dollar purchase at GameStop for the complete collection on 360 and thus began my love of RPGs.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim- Over three hundred hours on PS3. The worst of all three versions.

Fallout 3- Total blast of a game that has sadly become unplayable thanks to GFWL and the abysmal PS3 port.

Fallout: New Vegas- First pre-order I really got ready for. Not to mention another game I've suffered through an abysmal PS3 port and somehow sunk 200 hours into.

Mount and Blade: Warband- Best hidden gem on the face of planet earth.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3- The best Warriors game I've ever played yet.

WOW! What happened to all the jerks that used to keep repeating how this thread has been done to death, or that it should include more info? I guess they wait for the over-rated threads.

Anyway, Mine is Super Metroid. It has great music and atmosphere from beginning to end (even at the opening and menu screen), easy but complex game play with a decent amount of power-ups, some of the best level design with a load of secrets to be found, awesome boss fights that could be a little more difficult, and I just generally love it's style in how it can be so vibrant with patterns and colour while still looking serious/creepy.

There are two games I consider close enough to perfection for me.

Red Dead Redemption is a game I 100% on both consoles and everytime I start a new game (The main game or Undead Nightmare) I 100% again. It has just enough content for it be worthwhile and entertaining to complete everything. Rockstar make some of the finest singleplayer experiences I've had and I can't wait for a sequel.

Metal Gear Solid 3. One of the best videogame stories, some interesting gameplay mechanics (injury management and utilizing camouflage). 11 years later and the game still holds up fairly well (even after playing GZ). TPP looks like it may finally top 3, but I'll find out in a few days.

That Poll option had nothing to do with the topic, which makes this two topics in one, which was quite confusing at first, but now I am okey with it :D

Favorite game....
Has to be Warcraft III (Reign of Chaos AND The Frozen Throne) for me :)

Once again, Welcome!
very funny! And thank you all for this warm welcome from you all, I never expected for people to welcome me like this!

Persona 4 is still my favourite game ever, not my favourite mystery story ever now though because I played Devil on the G-String followed by Umineko No Naku Koro Ni and I doubt any mystery story can top Umineko and the plot twists and reveals in G-String were fucking fantastic. Never before have I actually had my mind blown until the reveal in the first chapter. You know. THAT reveal.

Persona 4 is still the best game for actually SOLVING the mystery yourself instead of waiting for the characters to do it for you. It throws up a massive wall of every single person you have ever met in the game and tells you to pick the killer on the spot right now or this game is over.

Also seeing how someone added CoC up above i'll add Monster Girl Quest to the surprisingly well written porn games list. Holy shit that game is amazing. Weird as all hell (obviously) but that just makes it better, similar to CoC it's a game where the story just would not work if it wasn't full of porn. It's surprisingly funny at times too, Illias taking the piss out of you in her evaluation meetings whenever you lose actually gets a laugh out of me more often than not.

Final Fantasy X. One of the few games I played where I could actually relate to some of the characters. I enjoyed the story, battle system, and the world of Spira a lot, too.

I don't know how anyone can pick a single favorite.
...I tend to hard time narrowing the list down to top fifty. Some games are life-changing, and some are just too close to perfect to rank.

I'll just list the first ten favorites that pop into my mind.

Saints Row: The Third, Mass Effect 2, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, The Witcher 2, Crusader Kings 2, Loom, Wizardry 7, Mount & Blade: Warband, Fallout 2, Suikoden II,... and that's ten.

Tough choice....

By default, I usually say Civilization IV here - with the stipulation that it includes Beyond the Sword and mods. That's more of a go-to answer than a proper one though. It is the best Civ game IMO, and that is the series I return to replay the most - to the extent its the first thing I re-install in the way of games on any new computer.

Outside that though, there are definitely some candidates that take up similar levels of awesome:
Banjo Kazooie. And Twoie. In fact, I think I prefer twoie a little, something about its darker tone, but both were amazing.
Warcraft III, and expansion. The campaign was rather interesting and got me hooked, and I need say nothing about the 'mod' scene for it that is just incredible. Starcraft I and II had the former, but the latter they were both missing in comparison due to either limitations on the map maker , or the difficulty to learn the map maker and hosting capabilities [II], which resulted in a less interesting mod scene in general.
Galactic Civilizations as a series has also always been pretty cool. Dislike the campaigns though. Something about them just doesn't quite work.
Witcher 3 is also pretty damn amazing. There are improvements to be had, but its probably the most impressive example of an open world game I have ever seen.
Mass Effect 1 was also pretty incredible. Great story, decent story environments, plenty of side stuff to do, unconventional gun mechanics... Still my favourite out of the series.
And of course the Hero of Time games in the Legend of Zelda series. All the LoZ games are pretty good, but the ones staring the hero of time take them to a new level. Ocarina and Majora. Great blend of music into the gameplay, a ton of secrets to find, fully 3D world with puzzle based dungeons to get through, fairly interesting characters, and in Majora its 3 day cycle which is something I wish would be done in more games. I could go on with praise for these games, but I don't think anything has yet topped them at what they do, which is somewhat surprising seeing how long they've been around.

There are plenty of great games. Not sure which I'd say is my favourite, but there are a lot I really love.

Soul Calibur II. I don't even know why. I generally don't like fighting games, but I just loved the hell out of Soul Calibur II. I first bought it on the Gamecube, and ended up buying a PS2 and Xbox just so I could play the versions of the game that included the different bonus characters. I've 100%-ed that game, like, 5 different times.

It's hard for me to pick ONE favorite game, as the ones I enjoy each do something really well in different ways.

These are the games that come to mind for me:

Shadow of the Colossus
Final Fantasy 9
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Banjo Kazooie (and Tooie)
Ratchet and Clank PS2 series
Disgaea series
SMT series (Nocturne in particular)
Valkyria Chronicles
Fallout 1,2, and New Vegas
Monster Hunter 3 and 4
Chrono Trigger DS

And I recently played Star Wars KOTOR for the first time. The game's a little rough around the edges, but it was a damn good game regardless, so I'll add it up there as well.

Oh man, don't ask me that, I can't pick just one!

I'll try for 5 10 15(ish), not in any particular order.

Dragon Age: Origins
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
Mario RPG
Stanley Parable
Final Fantasy 7
Luigi's Mansion
Ghost Trick
The World Ends With You
Mother 3
The Legend of Zelda (I can't decide I like so many; Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening, Wind Waker are probably at the top)
Mario platformers (same deal. Mario 3, World, 64, and Galaxy are probably at the top.)
Pokemon Snap

Whew, that was tough narrowing them down! Now for balance let's do top 5 least favorite:

Fable 2---------| Crushingly disappointing sequels to amazing games
Bioshock 2-----|-- that had a large part in killing my ability to become excited about anything
Dragon Age 2--|
Pokemon Stadium 2 - An interminable slog that stands in the way of the triple speed Pokemon Crystal emulator
Donkey Kong 64/Banjo Kazooie - Terrible, tedious collectathons with extremely janky platform mechanics, both of which I 100% completed
