Don't bother trying to sell me on the XBOX; I have no particular gripe with it, but brand loyalty has me reasonably tied to Sony over Microsoft. Also, as a high school teacher, I tend to do most of my gaming over the summer; it's almost just a question of whether I buy the PS4 this May or next May.

But here's the thing: I already own and have beaten AC4, Tomb Raider, and Infamous on the PS3. I have no inclination to re-play them on the PS4. Also, I'm not really a fan of FPS games. I've played a few Beta weekends of Elder Scrolls Online, but as all my friends are playing it on the PC, I won't get it for PS4. I'm on the fence on Dragon Age as I played the last two PC, but may switch for Inquisition.

Aside from playing SwapForce with my daughters, I don't really see anything that interests me on the PS4 right now though.

I am excited about The Order 1886, Second Son, and in 2015 Star Wars Battlefront, but those are a long way away. A whole new console for two games that excite me seems dumb; maybe a massive PC upgrade would be better.

TL;DR

So my question is: Am I missing other game options, or should I just give the PS3 another year?

this may be revolutionary but bear(god dammit teddy) with me.

when there is a game that interest you and you cant wait to play or it has a nice library of games that while individualy woudnt move you to buy a console, as a whole they draw your attention

I'm waiting until Infamous: Second Son is released and in the event that the game is terrible, I'll just wait for the price to drop. But with only two console exclusives, one being terrible (from what I've heard) and the other an FPS, I would wait.

I'm content with my PS3 for the meantime.

Personally I'm waiting until there's actually a library of games on the system that I feel are worth playing. As it stand now, to me that thing, and the X-Box One, are just huge paper weights. I'm still getting plenty of use out of my PS3, and probably will be for some time. So I say wait until there are games for it that you feel are worth it.

Yeah, though I think "next model" covers that somewhat. :D

Personally I'm waiting until some more games come out for the PS4, and more importantly that the HDCP encryption gets patched out like they said they would because while I do know that Sony's internal capture unit is very good, I'd rather use my own and put it through an actually competent editor on my computer, which in this case is Movie Studio Platinum 12.

I mean if there were a way for me to get the footage off my HDD and onto my computer via an external drive then that would be nice, but since they aren't gonna do that more than likely my best bet is to use my own capture card. I don't wanna have to use the HDCP strippers on the PS4 because they are bulky and expensive.

I chose the option of buying one after the redesign, if mostly for the fact my finances are going to be too tight for most of the year. inFamous: Second Son will still be available whenever I do have the money, and that's all that matters.

I actually persuaded my girlfriend to just play on my PS3 until a few good games come out for PS4, I'd suggest the same for you. At the moment, Outlast is the only thing I'd want to play, and I bought that at a very cheap price during the winter sales, so why Buy a console for a game I already own?

Short Answer: Wait until some games come out. Shorter Answer: Not Yet!

When you found a minimum of 10 good games on the system, possibly coinciding with a price drop.

Because what use is a darn console if you can't use it to play games you want.

When they actually get games that interest me and which don't also come out for the PS3

When second generation comes out, first generation is always full of bugs which will hopefully be fixed by second generation

I am waiting until the next Uncharted game to buy mine, knowing Naughty Dog, that will be at least another 2 years. So at the moment I can stick with my perfectly functional PS3. Though I do want to play Infamous: Second son, it can wait.

So the one real argument for buying a PS4 now is this: It's really unlikely to drop in price for a long time and it's practically a certainty that it will eventually have a great games collection. So buying it now isn't going to be that different from buying it at christmas this year, except that you won't have had a PS4 during that time span.

If you're happy to wait 1.5 years that makes the most sense, it depends how much of an early adopter you are. I think games are going to get cross-generation releases at least for the whole of this year. On the other hand, if you buy a game for a last-gen console, it's going to be more awkward to replay it when you finally do make the switch.

Not really.
I got a fat 80 GB Backward Compatible PS3 at the first price drop.
The slim remodel and second price drop was 1.5 years later.
I'm pretty sure this time round it's going to be a lot longer before the first price drop. Traditionally companies try to avoid slashing the prices of their consoles, partly so they don't screw over people who bought the console early, partly because their margins are already non-existent.

The PS3 slashed it's price early because it had a really bad launch, in comparison the 360 first cut it's prices over a year and a half after launch and then it was only $50 cheaper. The Wii first cut its prices two and a half years after launch and again only by $50.

So I think we're looking at 1.5 to 2 years for the PS4. The Xbox One should slash its prices in time for christmas this year, but even they might wait. The only reasons I think the PS4 might cut their prices earlier is if when the Xbone drops in price, Sony decide to hammer the nail in more and do a similar drop. But that's unlikely given how shaky Sony's finances are

When the games you want to play are out

That is they key :)

When the right games are out buy it with those games. If you really feel that RIGHT NOW the right games are out buy it now. If you don't see those games yet wait till those games are out.

You can wait there is enough time to play your "old" games. Hell the PS3 still has some good games out. Games I am sure you haven't played yet ;)

Or maybe to out of your normal game zone and play something very different. Just enjoy the gaming for the games.

Oh for those who expect a price drop soon. No! Because $600 was to freaking much. It was INSANE what Sony did then. They learned and now price their console as they should $400 is a good price for a console like that. $600 was a moronic choice, a big mistake by Sony.

Hell I bought it at 600 and yet had to wait 2 darn years for decent games. At that times the console was 400. Thanks Sony! At least now they learned.. 400 is a good price.

I'm going to wait to see if there are any huge hardware problems first. After the rrod fiasco, MS and Sony must think we're complete suckers (just look at what MS wanted to do with the xbone), so I'm going to wait to see if there's anything like that this generation, then wait for them to work it out. And yes while the rrod wasn't Sony's problem, they aren't exactly known for releasing stable hardware either.

Also, what's the point? There's no good games yet. I can't imagine buying the hardware, paying the monthly fee, then not wanting to play anything on it. Upgrade your pc, at least it has some good games.

When at least 4 out of the 5 following conditions are fulfilled;

1) The price drops to £220 or less
2) At least 5 games for it which I'd really like to play come out
3) All technical difficulties have been sorted out (although from what I can tell this one is fine already)
4) Games are no longer being released for the PS3
5) I can afford it

Similar criteria were required for me getting a PS3. I got one so late that most of the games I wanted had been out for a while already and were less than £20 as opposed to the usual launch price of £40. I still haven't found the downside to this set-up.

I voted for May 2015, but I assume there will have been a price drop at that point, otherwise I'd add myself to the chorus of "when the price drops".

I'd wait until you get a great exclusive for the console, once it get's it's Halo, or defining game. You're in the clear. In other words, The Last of Us 2.

PC upgrade in May 2014 is what I choose because the exclusives (how little how they may be) are not worth investing in a "next gen" console for. Most of the games are multi platform anyway and play way better on a PC than consoles.

Unless you know..you care about the Halo's or the Uncharted's.
