I see the avatar, usually if I like the avatar I'll remember the name too.
For example, TimeLord above has an avatar that's like looking into a mirror for me.

I usually go by name, because people do tend to change their avatars. But I normally do see both so if someone changes their avatar I'll be able to remember who they are.

If I don't recognize the avatar, I look at the name.

It's always the Avatar for me. In fact, I remember people based on their avatar without remembering the name.

Same thing happens in the real world. I remember faces but not names.
