I like Fallout a lot, though I've mainly played Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, and two of the DLCs for Fallout 3.

I like it because of the sense of freedom about the game, being able to do what you want to most of the time. Kill a bastard that's been annoying you, kill anyone. The loot and exploration factor is perhaps the biggest thing that gets me into these. It's what's added at least 250 hours to each game, and the reason I play it to this day. By now I have most of the main guns/melee weapons and their unique counterparts, but I still take joy in looting out new areas. I can't explain why. The battles are somewhat fun too. It's fun to kill most enemies. Maybe it's because of the sense of power I have? Maybe also because of the reward aspect involved with every kill you get. Every person you kill may have a weapon, armor, or something else to loot that you can just pick up and sell, use, or whatever. Some of the guns are also especially fun to use, while others are broken as shit and overpowered.

In short: Freedom to do what you want and the loot and exploration factors of the game. That's mainly what's got me hooked.

I thought of this while i was playing earlier today, and i was reminded of how the enemies in Half-Life was supposedly switched out for robots in the german version.
I would play on a less violent mode if there was one.

I like Fallout 3 and New Vegas because they are fun, funny, smart, accessible, engrossing, creepy and terrifying.

And they have good music.

I LOVE Fallout.

The only thing I don't love about it is a few problems in continuity. Like the fact that after 200 years society has barely rebuilt. Fallout 3 was fantastic, but the wasteland was unrealistically chaotic. I guess you can argue that humanity is rotten to the core and "war never changes" but come on - houses are still just lying there in wreck? No one bothered to clean anything up?

I dunno, it just doesn't make much sense to me. But I LOVE it!
I can't disagree more. First off the entire game takes place in a radioactive hellscape where the careful balance of nature that humanity was built on no longer exists. We don't even know if there are even fish in the sea. There certainly aren't a shit load of trees hanging around and no natural resources coming along. In Fallout1 they explained that all the non renuible had been used up and wars for oil started breaking out. Farming simply isn't done any more because the ground in radiated, and the rain itself is no doubt radiated so you can't simply drink the rain water.

To add to that while yes the war happened 200 years ago most of the vaults were closed for at least 100 years, and some (as mentioned in Fallout3) haven't opened at all. The vaults also hold the most advanced technology for surviving in a radioactive world. SO the people that survived but didn't get to vaults (as seen in fallout 2) had to make do with what they could or be lucky enough to survive somewhere that wasn't bombed and has a self sustaining eco system (as seen in happy trails DLC). The fact NCR exists now is only because Shady Sands was smack dab in between three vaults 13 12 and 15 i think...but don't quote me. And were able to put to use the tech from those vaults to begin rebuilding something resembling a society.

My point is because there is no farming communities able to thrive, because there is not enough working technology designed to help people survive a radiated wasteland, because there aren't that many animals that aren't trying to eat guts, because there is no easy access to water, people in fallout have naturally resorted to nomadic life styles and because of too many people and not enough food raiding has become common place. Anything beyond the most simple local government simply can't exist reasonably.

IF i had to complain about something regarding fallout i would say it's TOO optimistic on how long it would take rebuild society after the bombs dropped.

i just really like building different characters and trying to take advantage of the factions and their quests for maximum advantage and quickest exp gain.

I like it for the atmosphere and setting. A 1950's apocalypse world, plus it's incredibly immersive and open.

Not for violence, but I do like violence.
This.
Also, I have an inbuilt hate for being told which way to go and what I 'should do, and Fallout and Elder Scrolls games allow me to indulge my fuck you attitude by letting me get the fuck on with whatever I want to do within the confines of the world.

I like Fallout for how much you can get out of it. It's the kind of game you can play over and over again because there's just so many options you can take. The way the world is created is beautiful and it's something different. When I first saw it played I laughed at the violence because it is just so over the top and when I started playing it myself I barely even noticed.

I love RPG's. I love games that try an unusual/new setting. So Fallout stood out as a game I should try.

After playing the full series (and forgetting the awful PS2 game) I love almost everything about Fallouts writing. The world is so rich and interesting and the lore behind the vaults and the different species in the wasteland is also great.

What I admire most about Fallout is how it always has had its tongue in its cheek. While the main storylines may get serious and/or tense there has always been some great dark humour in the franchise.

Gameplay wise I appreciated how gameplay didn't rely completely on combat to advance, one of my favourite alternatives to fighting has always been the Speech skill, moreso in the original 2 games than 3 and New Vegas.

I also love the whole 1950's aesthetic to everything and even going to the length of making science in the world work off a 1950's understanding of radiation (back when they thought radiation could actually create something like ghouls)

I better wrap this up before I talk about it all day but suffice to say Fallout, especially when it first started was unique in its setting and in its quality of humour that was missing from all other WRPG's I had played. It was great to not be a knight/wizard on a quest to find ___ and save the kingdom.

I play Fallout because it is a fun game. I play it for the rpg first and fps second. I would still be able to play it without all the blood and decaptitations. Also when I play games I don't get more violent I just have fun. So I would disagree with the statistics
