So i am planning to play Fable 1 (I've never played it) and i was wondering why Fable Anniversary is low rated. Because Fable : The Lost Chapters' metacritic is 83 and Fable Anniversary's is 68.

EDIT : Thanks for the replies. I think i'll go with the Lost Chapters.

This game is $35.
It adds HD graphics (it is pretty), controller support and windowed mode. That is all, at least that I've seen.
The DLC for this game is $25. It consists solely of costumes you will never use and are inferior to the base-game armors.

I've had the game lock up on me several times, unable to progress until I loaded a previous save from about an hour ago. You cannot save in the middle of missions. Good luck!

Fable: The Lost Chapters is available for $10 and includes all of the same content minus the DLCs and the aforementioned additions. Unless your hobbies include frivolous spending and frustration regarding games not working correctly, you should save your money.
Cause it's expensive.

It's probably because Anniversary doesn't offer enough of an enhancement to justify the price. I don't see the need to shell out $35 when my copy of The Lost Chapters still works perfectly fine. I also don't find the "improved" graphics to be all that impressive. In fact, I'd say it actually makes the game look uglier:

The original's vibrant color palette is gone, character models are unsettling and everything has this weird blurry sheen to it, like someone smeared vaseline on the screen.

Honestly, your best bet would be to get The Lost Chapters, either used or off of Steam depending on your preferred platform. It's cheaper, looks better (in my opinion) and is still compatible with the Xbox 360/modern PCs.

Because it is hideous. It's glitchy, or at least it was. I couldn't go 10 minutes without it freezing and then there are all the little in game bugs which happen because of the redone visuals.

And back to the visuals. The original version had a very nice easy on the eyes fairy tale/Disneyesque art style. Colors were vibrant, characters had cartoonish over exaggerated features, and the environments were again, very pleasant to look at. I am especially a fan of Greatwood due to the fall scenery.

All of that was scrapped! in the HD version. The colors are washed out, the environments look plane. I mean my god! Greatwood baby what did they do to you! Instead of the vibrant fall colors they replaced all of that with simple green leaves and made it as boring as Fable 2. Then there are the updated character models. They completely butchered this. They had one job to do. Update the visuals. Think of how much further they could have taken the original art style. But instead they some how found a way to fuck it all up.

Instead they made everyone look absolutely lifeless with the off putting photo realistic re-texturing. Sorry I'm ranting but I will say one final thing. The main character model is a fucking abomination and it should be thrown into a fire before it multiplies!
Again how do you fuck this up Lionhead! >.< Peter isn't even there anymore. How did you do that!?

gotta agree with this...how did NO ONE stop and say "err...guys...this looks like shit..lets scrap this and try again, what made the original models look good?"

The lack of any new original content was what immediately turned me off the game; the major selling point was a graphical upgrade that was poorly executed and not that important in the first place, the tweaks to mechanics were highly limited to the age cap, and all one got for one's trouble was a couple more weapons, outfits and Achievements. As such, with little noticeable or desirable change, what was the point in buying it, especially for the price it was (and still is) retailing for?

In terms of the original question, the other thing we have to remember is that Fable's original release in 2004 was successful due to the innovation it brought to the table, and rightly so. Ten years later, the majority of the features in Fable have become commonplace, and have been executed better in a number of other games, including the Fable sequels, so you have to expect that the reviewer of Anniversary is not going to be as awestruck with the product as they would have been with the original ten years ago.

Can I just add that Fable: The Lost Chapters supports HD resolutions too, so technically speaking it's also HD, I mean the textures aren't but if you can get over that there really isn't that big of a difference due to how colourful it is.

Another thing, do you want to play it with a controller or keyboard and mouse?

Because that's kind off a big deal as Lost Chapters has no controller support and I've heard that Anniversary's keyboard and mouse controls aren't as good and aren't rebind-able, at least not some keys, so depending on what you prefer might be the way to choose.

Christ Jesus the protagonist looks ugly as sin in Anniversary.

Unfortunately I'd really rather play Fable on a controller so I might have to take the plunge on this one eventually.

...I'm still going to drag it out as long as I can. Also not happy with the drabbed-up color palette either.

Anniversary just wasn't the "upgrade" that the game needed. The movement is just as clunky, all the glitches are still there... and it's debatable as to whether the updated textures are even better than the originals.

Because on PC its exactly the same game and on console its "OMG SO MANY FUCKING LOADING SCREENS". A 2004 game on 2014 hardware and it still needs a 30 sec loading screen after every single small area, its completely absurd and unbearable.

My guess would be is because F:A was reviewed by a lot of people that never played Fable when it first launched, and as such there's no nostalgia to blind them. They're new to the game, and as such, they're not going to be forgiving of the small zones, long load screens between each section, lack of customization, stiff combat, etc. It's a ten year old game being reviewed by people that are expecting a lot more from their games.

It doesn't help that F:A has a number of bugs not present in the original.

When I tried to play this, the game locked up after I'd completed all the training missions and walked past that guy who sells names outside the Hero's Guild. I never tried to play it again.

Not only that, the game was actually uglier than the original on Xbox.

I think the fact that they decided to make A THIRD Fable 1, instead of making a PC-port for Fable 2 or a Fable 4, was enough for people to hate it from the beginning. Plus:

Fable: The Lost Chapters ported the game to PC, introduced new main- and side quests, new loot, new enemies, basically new everything. They also fixed so many issues from the original release.

Fable: Anniversary gives the game a more detailed look, but removes the charm of the colorful world of Fable 1 and TLC. Also, they introduce all new issues, like the game freezing when saving, etc.

where to start. First of this is a re-release of a game for full price that adds next to nothing to the game, which is absurd, we dont get a new or ubgraded game, we pretty much get the exact same thing with a few changes. Second it may be in HD but for me the previous graphics were perfect for the seating and the new ones....not so much. When playing the game i use to fell like i am in a fable not a generic fantasy world. Three, they how menus work, obviesly in favor to console players, which is not cool because for anyone who is a PC player, the way the console menus are laid out is retarded and frustrating. Four, they add next to nothing to the game itself. No new quests, no new items, no new places. Five Fable: the lost chapters is still fine, plays great and did not need a remake, this is a cash grab
