I'm sticking to windows XP for the forseeable future, I don't have a reason to get anything else.

I'll be sticking with Windows 7/Linux dual boot, Windows 8 looks like it's going to be dead on arrival. Although it is rather cool that for the first time they've made an OS that has slightly lower system requirements, should make it easier to run on cheaper PCs.

Everyone who is still on XP, why are you not upgraded to 7? That OS is over ten years old and it really shows...

Well, its the "OS in the middle." This OS is going to suck because Windows 7 was great. Microsoft never makes a great OS right after a great OS. They have to make a really bad OS, then they fix whatever they didn't pay attention to on the next iteration.

So, here's to waiting for Windows 9!

When I go back to the States, I need to buy a new laptop. I'm going to end up with windows 8 on it though I really don't want it. As someone who doesn't care for smartphones and the like, I prefer my desktop not to resemble one. If there is a straight forward feature to just stay in classic mode, I'd prefer that.

Pretty much this. Although, I'll give Windows 8 a try - I'll throw it on a VM and play around with it. Ma-a-aybe I'll elect to add it as a multiboot option, but it really has to blow my mind. Or possibly, if it comes with Scarlett Johansson or something.

I'm sure they could hastily add in the start menu again, with her head as the icon :p

I forgot about VMWare, I'll probably check it out on that. If it turns out to be shit then I'm going to be really pissed off at Microsoft as I may end up having to use it everyday at work as a test environment, although I doubt it would be as painful as running XP.

No I'll be sticking with my win7/mint dual boot for the foreseeable future. Having used Win8 on virtualbox I found the improvements over win7 minimal and found using the "windows 8 ui" to be quite clunky and counter intuitive for desktop users.

I might test it out on my laptop, but so far I am not impressed. I like the look of it and the fact that it seems to run smoothly, but I hate the fact that it's going to be a lot more restrictive than their previous systems. The one advantage they have over Apple is that Windows has usually been more open, but that's about to change. The advantage it has had over Linux is that it got better support for games, but as it turns out Valve managed to run Left 4 Dead 2 better using Linux than they ever managed in Windows 7. If Microsoft is going to make an OS that restrict me and alienate companies like Valve then I might just start using Linux again.

I'm with Dopo here, except I want Emma Watson. With her hair grown long again.

Those are my conditions Microsoft. You know what you must do.
Well, duh, I'm not some close minded freak. I could also go for Emma Watson.

So yeah, Microsoft, do your thing already.

Microsoft funds cloning research, says it's to "boost sales of the upcoming Windows 8"

Good!

On a practical level, I don't like any of the new features in Windows 8, and it doesn't seem to fix any of the issues I have with Windows 7, so I really don't have a reason to upgrade.

On an ideological level, I don't like the direction Windows 8 is headed. I can't think of a single thing that I like about tablet/smartphone OSs, so I am seriously opposed to these things coming into my desktop OS. Plus, it seems like Microsoft is designing it with form before function, which is just stupid. Finally, anything that closes down the OS at all I am in complete opposition to.
