So, I look at all the people complaining about the new Theif game, and how all these minor differences mean that it is ruined FOREVER! and I think back to this.

Would Metroid Prime, an FPS be possible today? I can imagine an announcement and people practically storming Nintendo, yelling that they DARE turn a beloved game into a "Dumbed down thing for Halo and COD 15 year olds."

Uh you know that people whined about Metroid Prime a lot back in the early 2000's as well. Then Prime came out and shut them up.
THey did. They didn't <link=http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/03/first-contact-with-the-bureau-xcom-declassified>Do it enough to get the damn thing nearly cancelled.

The XCOM game nearly got cancelled because it was shit, not because of 'public outcry'. The original X-Com games were popular but not that popular, there aren't nearly enough vets of the originals to even make a publisher like 2K bat an eyelash no matter how many times Spoony yells betrayal.

Hell Tomb Raider used to be known as a clever platformer series rife with puzzles and lighthearted cartoony adventure, now it's another gritty 3rd person shooter and people love it. Series are still being reinvented all the time, it's just often those reinventions are either shit or so thoroughly mediocre they've already been forgotten.

Different circumstances.

Back then the FPS genre was not crazy over-saturated the way it is now.

Also, the X-Com shooter, in addition to being a switch from an under served genre to a over-saturated one, looked rather shit. Metroid Prime, I gather, is generally considered to be not shit.

I think that's more because Nintendo has long ago shut out the voices of the angry, whining internet.

If they ever heard them in the first place (oho, mandatory "Nintendo is so behind the times" joke).

People on the internet will ***** about everything. That's why it's become so difficult to differentiate the legitimate complaints from the aimless elitist "it's changed, now it sucks!" Which is ever so more annoying when the thing they're whining about hasn't even been released yet, has a similar precedent from the past, and/or still feels like it belongs in the greater franchise it's a part of after it has released.
