The day Ash got rid of Squirtle, the show died for me.

Did he literally get rid of his old pokemon, like actually saying "I'm getting rid of Squirtle", or was it more like he just got new ones and forgot the originals?

Squirtle realises he's a sap and leaves him to join his homies.

He does sort of just give his other ones away over time.

Short answer, no. Like the heart of a body, if Pikachu was removed from Pokemon in some hilarious way(hopefully an explosion) then the series would die, due to the damn fans of the show.

In my opinion the anime is too repetitive to be at all entertaining. Infact it's almost unbearable however, show the show to the target audience and they'd love it.

All I remember of the series is that the episode where all the Pokemon were abandoned on an island and talked was the best. Episode. Ever.

The show probably wouldn't have survived without Pikachu, but Bulbasour was the only character I could relate to so I would have given up Pikachu in exchange for a recurring antagonist who could appear legitimately threatening for five minutes. Does anyone else notice that Pokemon was (is?) a cartoon about people poaching small woodland creatures, keeping them in tiny metal balls & forcing them to fight each other in arenas?
Isn't that a little creepy/f***ed up for kids show?
