So I've just started watching Oz on DVD and I was trying to google something about the US prison system in particular conjugal visits.

Some how I end up on this website:
http://www.meet-an-inmate.com/index.html

It's basically a matching site for finding pen-pals in the US system. It's strangely interesting in seeing these dating site-esque profiles for prisoners. Especially looking at some of their estimated sentences.

Which raises the question would you ever date an inmate? Would it depend on their crime? Or perhaps when they're being release?

Edit: To clarify they're on the inside at the time of intiation and will only be released whenever depending on their sentence.

Also combining it with this:
http://www.inmatesplus.com/ (allows you search for their crimes)

Makes for some interesting reading.

Also remember these are still people so avoid disrespectful or personal comments. I just posted this to stimulate discussion.

I voted no. I used to have a job that included visiting a prison once a week. People are people everywhere, even in prison. Some are nicer than others. I would say the risk of meeting someone who will turn out to be bad for your health is a lot greater inside than outside.

Eh... Maybe.

It really depends on the crime.

If they killed someone, no way in hell. Same with robbery, arson, fraud... Actually, yeah, no, I wouldn't.

Depends. Sentence, Crime, and did I know the person before hand? If the answer to that last question is no then no. If the answer is yes then it depends on the first two. I currently have a friend incarcerated and he and I off and on dated so....

I'd probably say no, mainly because of the lack of freedom, but I'm not generally opposed to the idea. It all comes down to what the person did, and how long he/she's away for.

I'm going to go with "no", but add that it does depend on what the person did, and that, given the right circumstances, I wouldn't be opposed to dating someone who had previously served time.

It really is all to do with the individual person and what crime they committed.

No... maybe... what was the crime?... how long's the sentence?... is she hot?

Context is important!

Check the site are there any women in their you'd actually date? Shows pictures and tells their sentence.

It's an odd site, out of curiosity I picked a profile that looked like a nice girl written quite fluently, ran the sentence, turns out she raped a minor. Woah that's messed up.

Yes. Or, well, maybe, it depends on the person we're talking about, obviously. Also to some extent the crime, but more the reason behind it and how they feel about doing it.

For example, if said person wasn't an inmate I wouldn't be more interested just because of that. So yea, I guess I could see myself dating an inmate.

I think it is more a case of "If you don't know them beforehand, you'd have to actively seek out a relationship with them", so no. Also, not really interested in relationships, so even if they weren't inmates it'd take someone truly phenomenal.

Then you have to ask "What is their crime?" and "Does their sentence length give a long-term relationship a chance?[footnote]If someone is in for another 5-10 years, it is going to be difficult to start a family, or move in together, or any typical long-term couple things.[/footnote]".

There's just way too much to deal with.

Only if she's hot and has a life sentence :p

But seriously no, I meet plenty of crazies as it is, don't need one legally confirmed to be wacko from the start.

If we'd been dating before the sentence, then, depending on the circumstances, I might still be with them when they're an inmate.

But developing a relationship with a person who's already in prison? That's way too complicated.

It wouldn't matter the crime or the sentence because I would not initiate contact. It would not occur to me to look for romance behind bars.

Gotta stick with "I don't know." Yeah, those people are in jail, but there's gotta be a good cookie or three in the bunch. And I've dated some real special cases.

Gave a peek. Would totally date that 21 yr old ukranian girl from the oregon prison ;)

That is assuming she didn't kill someone, think i'd be cool with dating a prisoner so long as crime commited ain't of a violent nature. And i don't think this is the case as her release date is december this year.

I can't say that I would date an inmate, for the sheer fact that I'd never have any time alone with her until she's released, but I would have no qualms with being very close friends with one, especially if she had no one else to talk to.

As far as ex-cons go, it really depends on the nature of the crime. If she was only in for something stupid like selling drugs, I wouldn't hold that against her.
