Unless life becomes like Call of Duty and I can respawn after being killed so I can shank the motherf***er who shot me with the shotgun then no.

I am a bit of a coward when it comes to war and being drafted. (I know there is no draft and it is all a voluteer army but still) If the draft is reinstated and we go to war, I will find a place to go into hinding and take a pistol or two with me in case they find me and shoot the federal basterds who try to make me go and save one bullet for me in case they corner me.

Dark I know but that's how I really feel about it.
You do realize the draft still exists and you CAN be drafted at any time in the US... right?

Do I want to die for my country? Hell no. I happen to be a huge fan of being alive.

Would I die for my country? Hell yes. I raised my hand, and swore an oath to support and defend. I'd rather that didn't involve my death, but if that's what happens, so be it. America is by no means perfect, but the ideals it was built on are worth defending at any cost.

Honestly it depends, am I dying to save peoples lives or just because my country says so? How and who would be affected for my dying, etc. So honestly the answers no I wouldn't die for my COUNTRY however I would die to save many more peoples lives!

Thank you, and that is a Great historical reference.

OT: Fight, yes, sacrifice, even my life, yes, but I wouldn't drink the special kool-aid because my government told me to... So I suppose even I have standards.

Completely ignoring all the pro-us style patriotism vs. european... lukewarmness to the subject, it takes sacrifice to keep where we live free and usually not ruled by despots, and if nobody is willing to make that sacrifice... What little good is left in the world will flicker and die.

There is a reason the military and acceptable society are always a couple steps out of sync. For me: "Those who ?abjure? violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf."
Let me guess, you like 24. Right? I prefer to think of it like this.

Person 1: "Everyone should live in peace."
Person 2: "There will always be dickheads who want to fight, so we have to fight back."
Person 1: "But if they're fighting, and you're fighting, how can we tell who's the dickhead?"
Person 2: "Erm, well, you see, we're American... and the Bible says... erm..."
Person 1: "'Turn the other cheek'?"
Person 2: "Nope, erm, the constitution..."
Person 1: "All men are born equal?"
Person 2: "Shut up, fuckin' liberal commie prick!" *shoots person 1*

I prefer to think of it my way because not only is it quite insulting but it is also very dismissive of other, probably reasonably valid, counter-arguments.

Anyway, I'm only left-wing because right-wing doesn't have any good satirists.

Actually, I've never seen the show, so my opinion on the show is no opinion. Frankly, if every single person thought your way, I'd love it. Militaristic does not always equal "baby eating myrmidon."

Take your 'dickheads who want to fight' line. Are there wars I'm not certain we should have entered in the first place? Certainly. Are there wars where if we did not step in than innocent civilians would die? Wars where the only goal of the enemy is the death or subjugation of the 'Dar al Harb'? Indeed there are.
I'd love to believe that people would just leave each other alone... and then I pay attention to the statements from every group from Al-Jazeera to a rather amusing Polish guy. (Do read up on that, it was rather amazing. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Foxman)

Whatevery your moral questions as to violence itself, you really can't call into question that people, from individuals to nations, will be attacked for nothing more than bigotry, whatever pretty dross has been stapled on top.

I've no problems with closeminded dismissive behavior so long as people realize they are indeed close minded and don't spout tolerance while knifing people in the back (Another specific reference, and this one is mainstream enough that I'll give four internets to whoever gets it.)

Depends on the threat.

If it's something that seriously affects the way of life, maybe.

If it's something like another country is taking over and going to continue business as usual, no.

you took the words right out of my mouth. but if i can kill the other guy, im gonna do that.

I would join in a heartbeat if The US were invaded. Other than that, not a chance.

I said no because I wouldn't die for my country per se, but I would fight for it and put myself in danger for it and the people that live here if it were necessary.

Nope. I just want to do the stuff that I'm doing. I don't really care about anything else. There are many things I like about this country. There are many things I don't like.
I suspect that this would be the same in any country.

I do however, prefer this country to a number of others.

If I had to die for something, I suppose it would be an ideal or a person. I've come close to severely injuring someone for a person I cared about.

A country isn't a singular thing, like an individual. A country is a conglomeration of many, many people all working to keep certain ideals alive and in working order. I happen to live in the United States, there are many people working around the clock to ensure that I can speak out against any leader I object to for any reason with out being shot or black bagged, can stay out as late as I want without fear of being violently accosted, and may seek any sort of employment regardless of what others tell me I should be, or just go and start my own business should I dislike employment.

When you ask "Would you die for your country?" you are asking me if I would give my life in defense of all the people who keep my life as free as it is right now, and give me so much choice and safety. So yes, yes I would die for my country if it could in any way protect those who protect me.

I'm curious as to where "baby eating myrmidon" comes from.

If there was a civil war, where a militia was necessary and one side was for socialist or nazi or facist ideas, and the other side was for current american ideals of freedom, then hell yeah I would take up arms for those ideals.

However if it was for people in washington now who all they care about is there own shelfish agenda (on both sides) rather then working together to come up with a solution to better help our nation grow an prosper. Well in that case I'm glad I'm not a secret service agent.
Umm, I think you mean communist ideals. America already has socialist stuff in it. Socialism is just the idea that the government should control parts of industry/services. Which America's government does.

Also, if America had a "socialist" (taking this to mean slightly toned down communism, but I'd support communism as well) revolution I'd totally fight for it. Sorry, that's just how I role.
You speak like a person who has no idea what communism is, I however do. I grew up in a communist nation. I know what government control means and leads to. My own grandfather was beaten and tortured by secret police because he refused to preach they way they wanted him to. You don't know what it means to see people you know speak out against the government while drunk and then to disappear, only to show up a few days later with fresh bruises, and reprogrammed.

And yes I did mean socialism, the baby steps toward a communist nation. In fact your own statement is contradictory, If you had been in a communist nation, daring to say you wish your government was a different way would earn you a front row seat to what it truly means to struggle under a communist dictatorship.

I respect the freedom that lets you have an opinion, though I don't agree with the opinion you've formed, that's what freedom is, and that is the ideals I would give my life for.

Unfortunately if it ever did come down to a war between 2 factions like this, we would be on opposite ends of the battlefield.

edit: Btw what guns would you use in socialist, or communist revolution. Your not allowed to have any.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread, but this is the only answer that's really made any sense. Could not have said any better.

Why die for your country? It's counter-productive. Survive and serve. Make someone else die for theirs,if you're a soldier.
