So lets say hypothetically some sort of device that allows you to merge two people into one, a little like in Dragon Ball Z, is invented.

The change is permanent.
It cannot be done more than once.
The two people must be the same sex.

The resulting person is a normal human (46 chromosomes), except they have the combined memories and personality of the two people, as well as the combined physical characteristics both good and bad. A fat guy and a skinny guy would make an average person. Chronic diseases would be halved in severity. The age would be the average of both people. Pretty much every factor like height, weight etc would be the average of the two people, plus a little bit extra roughly (25-75%) depending on the people.

Fusing would only be able to be done over the age of 18. There are laws in place to prevent an 80year old fusing with an 18year old just to live longer, each case of fusing must get approval from a medical board. Legally the fused person owns all the stuff of both people, but things like marriages and careers have to be sorted out on a case to case basis.

My question is would you fuse with another person? Explain you're reasoning why you would or wouldn't. Who would that person be?

I might do it with one of my very close and old friends, if they were willing?

Edit: Alright, because some people are saying that there aren't really any advantages. New rules. The fusion has a greater intelligence and physical condition than the two individuals. It's not 2x, but it's significantly greater.

Edit2: New ability, you can possibly save someones life by fusing with them when they have a mortal injury, you make it 50% of what it is.

Well, short of fusing with the Buddha to obtain enlightenment the easy way (which it sounds like your rules would not allow), no, I don't think I'd feel very inclined to fuse with another living being.

Tempting but there is nobody I would actually want to fuse with. I may do something like fuse with Albert Einstein (or the equivalent of) so he could provide to humanity longer but that is about it.

Are there any limits? Can the fused person refuse with another random person, or two fused people re-fuse somewhere down the line? I can see this creating some massive, sociopathic hive mind somewhere down the line.

Well it all depends on who you fuse with. Combined finiancial wealth of two people, with the needs of one. Two combined lifetimes of knowledge, could master too different fields of science or something. A sibling could combine with a sibling with a chronic disease like cystic fibrosis. Instead of them dieing at thirty, the fusion lives to 60-70.

But I gues the real question is is there anyone you're close enough to, to want to share a body?

Not even close.

Personally, I'd never permanently fuse with someone if I had to follow rules like that. If the rules were more flexible, like saying "you are allowed to break 1 of these rules in a fusion" then I might be more likely. Then again, there aren't many men I know who would do the same, mostly because it'd be weird to share the same girlfriend with half of yourself that you can't control...The number of mental implications...

I wouldn't want to fuse with someone, I wouldn't want them to know all my memories and everything I have done up until the fusing. Sure they may be a good friend but I don't tell everyone I know everything about myself and couldn't imagine them knowing it all.

New rules, if two smart people or physically fit people fuse, they become smarter or stronger than their one of the originals it's not 2x but significantly more (25-75%)

You essentially one person with the memories of two. You girlfriend would feel the same as she always did. The weird thing would possibly be being in love with two women at once, if the other guy had a significant other.

damn man you take all the fun out of it
first of all you decided no male-female combining so i cant have sex with my self and create the next step in human evolution
then you say that the combo if permanent so i cant even temporarily combined with people to gain their knowledge
what next i cant combined with aliens just because the arnt assured of having the right number of chromosomes? does that include supermen?
