PopCap Mounts the Unpleasant Horse

In a desperate attempt to keep its collective head from exploding, PopCap Games [http://www.popcap.com/] has launched a new studio called 4th & Battery that's already hard at work on some serious weirdness called Unpleasant Horse.

PopCap takes its casual games very seriously. When you get a PopCap game, you can be sure that you're getting the best of the best: deeply engaging, highly-polished and tweaked to perfection. But that's not an easy standard to maintain in every single project and sometimes it means that potentially cool ideas end up set aside because they just don't fit that well-honed mold. Thus, 4th & Battery [http://www.4thandbattery.com/], an "experimental label" where PopCap can run around naked without worrying about annoying the neighbors.

"4th & Battery is a pressure valve intended to keep our heads from exploding," said PopCap Executive Vice President Ed Allard. "The PopCap brand has become closely associated with ultra-high quality, polish and attention to detail - which is a great thing. But our standard game development process is therefore long and involved, and doesn't really accommodate all of the creativity pumping through our collective veins. 4th & Battery gives us a way to quickly try really strange or marginal ideas, and to give our designers a safe area to hone their chops."

"4th & Battery is a purely experimental, creative label with none of the typical concerns like schedules, profitability, or even target audience. It's kind of the video game equivalent of B-sides or short films," added PopCap co-founder Jason Kapalka. "Expect weirdness."

The first bit of weirdness to come out of the studio will be Unpleasant Horse, a game about a "strikingly unpleasant horse" that also happens to fly, and who progresses through the game by killing small birds and landing on other, more pleasant horses, forcing them downward into a "perpetual meat grinder" to earn extra points and special bonuses. Hey, the man told you to expect weirdness.

Unpleasant Horse will be out later this month for the iPhone and iPod Touch via the App Store, and will be free.

Soooo, the first thing I noticed is that horse has a Cutie Mark. I think pony on the brain is the proper diagnosis.

Well, I for one am a massive fan of anything strange or weird. The more mindfuckery inherent in something, the better. So this new PopCap-affiliated studio sounds like just my sort of thing. I am certainly going to be getting this on release, no doubt about it :D

First thing I thought when I clicked on this article, "this must be a My Little Pony game".

Someone explain to me how the idea of maiming innocent creatures is supposed to be fun? I really don't get it. This isn't weird, its just kind of sick, and the only intriguing aspect in the premise is that someone actually made this.
If it somehow has a lot of personality and excellent level design, maybe it could somehow manage to be respectable in these elements, but if its such a marginal division of Popcap meant for obligation-free development, (and the catharsis of the developers) I just can't see it going beyond a little iphone casual game whose only selling point is its grotesque concept.

You know, the kind of reputation a lot of people have been trying to steer the medium away from for the past several years? And Popcap being behind this? A company that is representing gaming as a whole to millions of people? I mean, my great aunt likes Popcap. Are they trying to get into Adult Swim's vulgar iphone game monopoly?

You know, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it manages to be a remarkable game that manages to handle this apparently gruesome material so perfectly, that it makes anyone doubting it do a 180.
I just really can't imagine this being a good idea.

Bad horse! Bad horse! Bad horse! Bad horse!
He rides across the nation, the thorough bred of sin.
He got the application that you just sent in
It needs evaluation, so let the games begin
A heinous crime, a show of force,
A murder would be nice of course.
Bad horse! Bad horse! Bad horse! He's bad...

Somehow from the title I thought this was going to involve the fat pony from Hark A Vagrant.

The small bit I've seen makes it seem highly amusing. I'll have to keep an eye out for this one.

its stuff like this that gives me hope for the mainstream of gaming.

Looks like PopCap are implementing an idea from Extra Credits. A mini studio with creativity as its only goal.

Now, of only more companies would follow this lead.

Oh, and PopCap, bring this game to Steam!
