Portal 2 Sells 3 Million, for Science

Millions of players have tried to escape from Aperture Science a second time around.

Yesterday, at the well-received [http://gamesforchange.org/festival2011/speakers/gabe-newell/] Portal 2 had sold 3 million copies since its launch at the end of April.

Given that Newell didn't mention any specific platforms, as Joystiq notes [http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/newell-portal-2-has-sold-3-million-copies-since-launch/], it's likely that this figure is a grand total of all copies sold across PC, Mac, PS3 and Xbox 360.

It's also interesting to note that this is likely to be one of the few completely-accurate sales numbers in the post-digital-distribution world. Market analysts like NPD can tell us that the original Portal has sold 4 million copies since its release in 2007, but that only covers boxed sales from retail - there's no way of knowing how much it sold on Steam.

Unless, of course, you were to be the CEO of the company that owns and operates Steam. In that case, you'd probably know exactly how many copies the game sold.

You know, Gabe, it'd make analysts' lives a whole lot easier if you guys just reported that sort of thing on a regular basis.

So how longer do I have to wait until I can get the 'Platinum Hits' discount?

Eh, whatever. I'm buying it next month (as soon as I finish paying for my smartphone) anyway.

So, what is that... around 150 million dollars? Dayum, Valve, that's quite a pretty profit. I hope your employees will be walking away with some snazzy bonuses to their name, because they deserve it.

Not that surprising... remember the day Portal 2 released on Steam? I swear, my entire friends list was playing it. It was like on Xbox Live when Black Ops came out. Plus, it was a great game so it deserves it. Congrats, Valve. Now here's the obligatory "Episode 3" comment.

Which is another big thing... I mean, apart from DotA 2, we don't really know what Valve is working on in terms of big games. Maybe with this several million dollars they can at least come out with a teaser trailer...

By the way, the Portal 2 soundtrack is so good.

I'm glad, Valve making money hopefully means Episode 3 within this decade.
Fix'd.
4 posts in? You're getting sloppy forums, I'm expecting Episode 3 mentioned in every valve related story in at most, two posts. You're letting us all down here guys.

Yeah, have they ever made a "bad" game? Every Valve game I've played, L4D2, HL2, P1&2 and Alien Swarm, I've enjoyed quite a bit.
You haven't played Ricochet now have you?

That's great and all, good for them. Now what about the DLC we were told was coming out this summer? The people with that weird looking PC controller already have it so when do we the unwashed masses get it?

The DLC with the controller is all to do with the functions of the controller itself, like stretching boxes and shit.

You can download user-maps atm and use those as free DLC, and if you consider the quality of the TF2 maps you'll know you have some real talent working for free.

As for official DLC, well I have faith unlike most companies' promises. Valve delivers.

Yes, but in Valve time.

They said Summer, they meant Summer of 2017.
