Pregnant Woman Gets Pregnant

No, that headline isn't a bizarre stutter; An Arkansas woman, already two and a half weeks pregnant with a baby girl, has become pregnant with a baby boy.

No doubt trying desperately to sound like they weren't shocked, doctors interviewed by MSNBC [http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33006136/ns/health-kids_and_parenting/] explain that this is an uncommon occurrence known as "superfetation" in which a pregnant woman's body still manages to release an egg which is then ... well, just ask your mom where babies come from.

Most fascinating is the almost logical fact that the two babies have separate due dates, one at the end of 2009, and one in early 2010. Being a male of the species I'm sure I don't quite grasp the subtle complexities of having two children come rampaging out of one's body only weeks apart, but I bet it stings.

Like, a lot.

This... is really weird. I bet she'll get a ton of media attention when it starts going down.

Please, for all that is holy... don't turn it into a reality show or some stupid shit like that.

Meh, this is biologically possible so no surprise there. Seems like people get surprised because they're so rare.

Surely she'll give birth to them at the same time? I mean, they move about in there and stuff, the chances of the right bayne coming out first is 50/50. oO

Oh my. Well, uhh, that's gotta suck...what with having to give birth to two babies in two seperate sittings. I'm so glad I'm not a woman.

Good for her then i guess? Why wont she give birth to them both at the same time?
I would GUESS that there will be some form of complication, and teh boy will have to be born a few weeks prematurely when the girl is due, but the due dates are from conception (I believe), so two pregnancies, a few weeks apart, would have two seperate due dates :)

In all probability she will. The boy is only 2 1/2 weeks behind so he will be fully developed. Once the contractions start and everything they'll both come out. I think I'd be increadibly surprised if he didn't. On the plus side though she probably wouldn't hurt as much two weeks later when he did decide to come out.

She will, especially since the due date is so close.

My question when I read this was "Whatever happened to patient-doctor confidentiality?"

So we might assume she has given permission for this story to be told (be it for money, fame, stupidity, medical science, etc).

So.... how many really weird/interesting medical stories DON'T we hear about? Surely a very large number of people aren't keen on having their family 'story' turned into a media freakshow you would hope...

i think there are ways to postpone the birth of the female and make the birth of the boy early so they could find a point in between

unless the water broke of course

in wich case it would really suck....

but well, hope she is ok

Well, considering the chance of premature birth, I'd say the new one is in for one 'Ell of a, how should I put this, "Coming out" party.

As much as this rare occurrence is cool and all, the entire time was readying this i kept thinking "So she's a living analog of the games industry now?", referencing of course all the delays into 2010.... I think i need to stop reading video game news and regain some of my humanity...

and in thinking on this post, i know i am definitely going to hell....

... But wouldn't two seperate fetuses at different stages of growth stunt one another?
Eh. If they didn't say so, I guess not.
S'pretty cool, though.

Wow, this must be rarer than non-identical twins.

I always thought it was impossible to have two siblings with less than nine months age difference. I probably should have guessed that it was at least possible, although technically it shouldn't be.
