Premium APB Subscribers Will Get More Customization

You only get the most complex customization of your character if you shell out money for a premium account in the free to play incarnation of APB: All Points Bulletin.

One of the many things that GamersFirst said they liked about APB [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105311-GamersFirst-Acquires-APB-Will-Relaunch-in-2011-as-Free-to-Play-MMO] when it acquired the license to the game from the now defunct Realtime Worlds was the immense amount of character and vehicle customization. Unfortunately, Bjorn Book-Larsson believes that free players downloading all of that content and logging into the game with such complex characters will clog up the servers and make the game less profitable and less fun for everyone. The proposed solution is not to limit the amount that you can change for free players, but instead limit what other people in the game will see. You will only see the really crazy stuff on those characters whose players dropped the cash for a premium account. The good news is that your account status is only checked at the time of customization, so even if your premium account lapses, people will still see all your bling.

"The customization system [of APB] can generate incredibly complex objects that at runtime get pushed to all the other players in a session, which means that the more complex the customization, the more stuff has to be pushed to everyone in a particular game," Book-Larsson said on the APB Reloaded blog.

"Instead of limiting what you can customize as a free player, you will be allowed to customize almost anything, but you will not be able to store (and share) complex customizations above a certain complexity level unless you are a premium player," he said. "It would also let you be premium for just one month, create a lot of customizations that month, and then use those items later on (even if your premium membership has lapsed.)"

It's an interesting way of limiting server traffic while also keeping the illusion that your character looks super-mega-cool. If you keep playing for free, your cop or will just look so-so to those around you, but it will always look awesome to you.

There is still no word on how GamersFirst will honor old subscriptions for APB, but there were hints that such accounts would be grandfathered in as premium accounts for a short amount of time.

First off, looking at that picture I am once again bewildered by the fact that no one in video games knows how to use a SPAS shotgun (protip, the stock is supposed to fold out)

Seriously though, this really doesn't interest me. The game will always have the stench of bad development, and I'm not sure the extra customization is going to be enough to reel back in the original players who felt profoundly disappointed by it.

I was thinking of how easy it would be to cheat and pay for the good bling then let it lapse, but then I realized I wouldn't be cheating at all. That's exactly what they want me to do.

On the other hand, if there's one thing in online games that makes me have no problem with paying for something is paying for something that directly increases bandwith. So I guess I'm down with this.

Still, when this gets back online it'll be under more scrutiny than Duke Nukem Forever, so it'd better be the World of Grand Theft Autocraft that it was originally hyped up to be.

well, Jean-Luc Cougar does (you know, blondie boy from Operation Winback =P)

on a topic related note, well, even if the game fails again, customization is always nice to amuse yourself for a while ^-^

Actually, reminds me of Starsiege.

If you had awesome costum skins installed for your mechs but others didn't had those, nobody would see those but only you. Sure, it's an illusion.

But knowing it is one and paying for it as well sounds actually pretty bad in my book. How is this ten shit of awesomeness? Unless I got the article wrong, they are just tricking the player and asking money for it. It's also confusing as hell.
Yeah, you've kinda gotten it backwards. You pay for premium items that everyone can see, but only premium players can equip... I think... You're right it is slightly confusing.

STALKER's gotten it right consistently. I want to say the one in FarCry 2 was proper as well, but I almost never used shotguns, so genuinely don't remember.

I guess its suppose to look cooler that way...

Anyways, is the premium account only for that? My commonsense is tingling, and I think someone is missing the point of making people pay for a premium account.

If I read it right, other players can only see your customised character if you pay. Otherwise you just look plain to them. At least that's how I interpreted it, anyhow.

Dude, they're not adding more customization to the game, they're trying to keep the level of customization they have from crashing the servers.

I don't think they could have added any more customization to the game.

See for yourself:

Also, we all know the stock is supposed to fold out, people just think it looks more badass withou the stock.

(to be read in the voice of ben "yahtzee" croshaw) the game got shut down 68 days after release! nobody gives a damn about the game anymore except those who bought, subscribed and forgot to return the game!

Fair solution, I wasn't a cam whore, I was a narcissist, so as long as I look good for myself, I don't care =D

...

I so want to yell "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!" to these people...

Seriously, why not work on the gameplay mechanics and little stuff to get that up to speed? Why the *^%$ do I care about customization if it doesn't help me kill things faster?

It wont work. People will never pay for anything in this game ever again.
You would be surprised what majority of MMO crowd is ready to pay for, from very crappy korean f2p mmos that come out as actually more expensive than running 2 subscription on WoW to 'That Retarded Horse' [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCjuFpQ3EeA] in WoW itself.

The customisation was the best part of APB. The gameplay and the way you made money to feed that customisation was the worst part. All they needed to do was solve that. If they'd just added a more varied experience and balance then it would've been fine.

I feel so let down by APB that I'm not sure if I'm going to pick it up again.

Hang on, isn't the GamersFirst guy saying that free players essentially get less layers to use in customisation? He says you cannot create and share complex designs "above a certain complexity level", which to me sounds like while premium players can use as many layers as they like, free players get less (perhaps half, as a hypothetical) so there's less data being sent to everyone else.
