Prey 2 Lives On

Prey 2 hasn't been canceled, but it will be delayed.

It's been quite a ride for Prey 2. First we got trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108430-French-Gaming-Mag-Confirms-Prey-Sequel-UPDATED]. Happy again! But then a rumor started making the rounds that Bethesda had killed the game, and there was much sadness.

But now we're back to happy time, sort of. It turns out that Prey 2 is alive and kicking, but it's not going to be out this year. It seems that the development situation isn't unfolding quite as Bethesda had planned.

"Development of Prey 2 has not been canceled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards," the company said in a statement. "Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule."

A certain amount of that demand for higher quality has to be ascribed to sharp marketing but speaking strictly for myself, I'd rather wait for a game to be done right than get something on schedule come hell or high water and end up with a rushed, unsatisfactory experience. It's been six years since Prey [http://www.amazon.com/Prey-Xbox-360/dp/B000C427NM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334845787&sr=8-1] did its thing, after all, so what's one more?

This is why I like Bethesda. If this was EA, then they would just give it a lot of pre-order and day 1 DLC, force multiplayer in and then rush it out.

Good news, I was hoping that this game wasn't cancelled, looking forward to when they release a quality game.

I like that Bethesda is taking care and not rushing a game out before its ready, in the words of Gabe Newell "A product is late for a little while, but a product will suck forever". Though on a different note i think calling nearly 5 years "a little while" is pushing it a bit Gabe.

Notice how they never mention Human Head in the press release. I'm glad this game's alive but their recent facebook thing with Rune seems to suggest they're no longer heavily involved in this project. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm glad that Prey 2 isn't cancelled, but from the language they use in this press release, I'm a little concerned they may just stick it into production limbo until people forget about it. I hope I'm wrong, because the details looked absolutely awesome.

It's normally stuff like: "so and so has been delayed so that we can polish it to the extent that it deservers." This makes the developers sound lazy or incompetent (or both). Good news for the game. I had a wtf moment when the rumored cancellation came up swiftly followed by the news that Bethesda was re-releasing Quake 4!

I guess their publishing arm isn't run by the same gaggle of hyperactive spider monkeys that their legal team is.

It´s probably a case of feature creep.
Human head is probably trying to cram so much new stuff into the game the development on the rest of the game has stopped on other parts.
Feature creep is what hurt duke nukem and prey and dragged out their development.

I'm happy to see that they did now cancel this game,the E3 video looked really promising.

Tommy will be in the game, but not as a playable character. What role will he be playing is still unknown, but at least he managed to take good care of those jeans.

OT: I don't mind, the first game was great, I really liked it and it still looks pretty good today, even a lot better than Doom 3, wich looks like shit nowadays. We managed to wait 6 years (1 in my case) until the first game came out, what's another 6 years for the sequel?.

Your right, there are too many Native American based shooters out there. What we really need a un-shaven middle aged white guy in space to help us break that "generic native american" FPS mainstay of the industry!

HAHA! That's sarcasm. Jesus Christ, what did I do to you? The plot revolves around a bounty hunter. Tommy couldn't support that theme. Tommy is a do-gooder. He doesn't follow money. He is the generic hero character, who always does right. Skin color isn't a character trait.
Also, you're acting like I hadn't played the game. I played it, two years before this announcement, and I love that game.

I wasn't trying to be mean, merely funny. I just wished it would stay with the native American theme. Otherwise it kinds just blends into the background of shooters for me personally. You may be hyped for the game, and that's cool, different tastes for each person. Its really not for me though, just doesn't seem like a true sequel.
