Prince of Persia: Sand of Time Trilogy Coming to PSN

It's out with disks and in with downloads for the HD re-releases of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time games. Unless you live in Europe, in which case you can have disks, too.

Last month, Ubisoft confirmed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104065-Ubisoft-Announces-HD-3D-Prince-of-Persia-Compilation-for-PS3] the rumor [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102642-Rumor-Splinter-Cell-and-Prince-of-Persia-Collections-Coming-for-PS3] that it was releasing a Prince of Persia: Sands of Time collection for the PS3 with new high-def graphics. Unfortunately, Ubisoft only confirmed the collection for Europe, crushing the dreams of PoP fans in other parts of the world. But not all hope is lost, because while the physical release is limited to Europe, the games will be also be available digitally.

Ubisoft's latest financial report [http://www.ubisoftgroup.com/gallery_files/site/270/1042/2350.pdf] includes a revised release schedule for its releases between October and December, which includes separate listings for Sands of Time, Warrior Within and The Two Thrones, with the platform listed simply as "PSN." Any region-specific releases are noted down as such - the physical version of the collection, for example, is listed as "EMEA," or "Europe, Middle East and Africa" - so it would appear that the digital releases , which just list the games' names, are intended for everyone.

This also raises the question of whether the games will stay exclusive to the PS3. Keeping the physical release on the PS3 makes a certain amount of sense, as you can fit all three games on one disk, but when it comes to digital distribution, the cost of stamping disks, printing case inserts and shipping games to stores isn't a factor. The Sands of Time trilogy was never a Sony exclusive, so unless there's some kind of exclusivity deal worked out between Sony and Ubisoft, there's no reason the re-masters couldn't wind up on Steam or Xbox Live Arcade as well. We've asked Ubisoft about the chances of a multiplatform release for the games, and will update the story if we get any new information.

The Prince of Persia HD Collection comes out on November 19th, and presumably the digital versions will be available around the same time. If Ubisoft handles it anything like Sony has for the God of War PSN releases, then the games will be available separately for a certain price, or as a bundle for a slight saving.

Not having disks makes me a sad panda but I expect I'll be getting this one way or another. I know it makes sense to release them digitally but with the Sly and GoW collections on disk it seems odd to forgo this option. Perhaps it reduces used game sales?

Any computer from the past 5 years will run them, so why not buy them on Steam and run them in HD anyway?

Not all people have credit cards so this may be the next best option.

Well, it's better than nothing. I know people will absolutely hate me for saying this, but I liked the 2008 Prince of Persia better than Sands of Time, anyway.

I might grab this collection, though, because why not?

Well, the physical release is only in Europe, and there can't be that many people without a debit or credit card, or who don't use PayPal, etc.

You've got my support on the 2008 PoP thing!

Now I can play the trilogy again, without using my Gamecube controller.

I wonder when they'll be added to PSN. Today? Or next week?

Er...
the PC version of each game have the same graphics as they do on the consoles...

I don't see why this set is worth buying though...
I didn't really like parts 2 and 3 that much...
Now, if an HD Sands of Time were available separately, then I might consider it...

I'm pretty glad this collection is coming right up in the PSN :) A chance to relive these games in HD and with trophies (like a mini game set aside) sounds A-OK to me!

Well, these games are already available on Steam and any computer decent enough can run them, even at HD resolutions. I even finished The Two Thrones on my 6 year old laptop.

It's a bit stupid to not release this collection outside of the PS3, the game was multiplatform, even the Cube had the whole trilogy from the beginning. They can even release this on the Wii if they wanted to, something similar to the Prime Trilogy, except that if they DO think on realising this, add optional control schemes to play it with the classic controller or the Cube controller, instead of just waggling around.

Only PS3? Damn Ubisoft, I remember when you were cool and didn't write shitty stories about shitty assasins...

I guess I'll start saving up money for a PS3....

I think the reason it is limited to PSN doesn't have to do with XBL Arcade being merely on a different console, but rather the size of the games. XBL Arcade only supports games up to 2GB in size, which the collection is definitely larger than.

The PC versions went up to HD resolutions when they came out, and the graphics would have been better than the console versions assuming they were the same as any other multi-platform release.
