Civvie11 and GGMan, are the best people on YT that talk about fps. Civvie on the other
hand is not so much a reviewer as he guy that goes in depth for games level designs and mechanics. He's also done videos 3rd person shooters and a good amount of point-and-click adventure games. This something for all of the Doom 3 fans on the forum.

Hawki, if you're reading this now, it's also a gift for you. Heard you weren't having the best day, so I thought about you when posting the vid. Everyone enjoy. I highly reccomend seeing this guy's other vids.

Doom 3 is gets too much of a bad rap. Its still a solid game none the less.
The hatred for Doom 3 died down around 2012/13. Thanks to one part Yahtzee, and another part where during the 7th generation most gamers were tired of games trying to copy COD (I got sick of them by 2009). The haters took for granted what Doom 3 accomplished or the plethora of content it had compared to the contemporary shooters of 7th gen. Me personally, I never had much hatred from Doom 3 other than the flashlight. Ironically, there is some reverse hatred going on with the BFG Edition, where fans of vanilla Doom 3 hate it, because having your weapon and flashlight at same time makes the game "less" scary. Which is a load of bullshit. Why these type of fans care now about the flashlight now is ridiculous. Where the hell were you defenders when the "duct tape" mod came out over 15 years ago?

What worked for me in Doom 3 was the atmosphere, and the fact that they were taking things from the PSX and N64 versions of Doom. Similar soundtrack, ambient noises, slower paced gameplay (N64), and enemies spawning behind you. The last one I could deal without though.

Doom 3 and its RoE expansion were both entertaining and well worth playing through at the time, and probably still hold up pretty well with mods. The trip down to hell in the latter was one of the greatest closing levels in any shooter even to this day. I think it?s mostly because the design philosophy was such a departure from the first two games, but it was a nice change of pace because id did what they set out to do well, which is adding immersion, tension and context to a series that no one ever thought could use it in the first place.

I?d still rather play through something like that than in the newer reboot/Eternal vein if they ever returned to that style.

More like a bad month, but thanks.

Anyway, chances are you already know how I feel about Doom 3, but in case you don't, it is my favourite Doom game, and it does end up in my top 10 FPS games. I get why Doom fans don't like it as much, but I'm usually not the person who subscribes to "it's different, now it sucks" - if that was the case, RE4 wouldn't be my favourite RE game for instance. But taking D3 as a game in of itself, I like it. I love the atmosphere. I love its take on Hell, and how it 'bleeds over' into the base once you return. The story is...okay, at best, but it's still competently presented and the best story the Doom series has had (granted, that's a low bar). Also like how Mars City feels like a Martian base that could actually exist, and the game reminds you just how harsh a planet Mars actually is (such as when you step outside, and see how the demons are just fine with stuff like low temperatures and anoxic environments). D3 oozes atmosphere. And while not the best in the world, the gunplay is fun. Straddles the line between giving you enough ammo that you can feel like a badass at times, but not so much that this is the default state, and you can certainly feel vulnerable as well. Not really survival horror, but has touches of it.

So, yeah. Really like Doom 3. Still, least as far as Doom goes, I doubt we'll ever see a game like it, since for better or worse, it's found a (new?) footing with Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.

I've only played the BFG Edition, so can't comment too much. That said, there's sections of the game that were obviously designed for you having to switch between a flashlight and gun - the one where the glowing tanks move on rails come to mind.

Glad to help. Enjoy the weekend.

I am aware of the differences between versions. I do feel it's petty of them to be so bent up about it. If BFG edition had the option to play the classic way there would not be as much complaining. People would have still complained regardless knowing fickle certain gamers can be.

I enjoyed Doom 3 quite a bit, though Doom 2016 was a more satisfying game.

Still, wouldn't mind them trying to do a more horror/ atmospheric Doom game again.

Doom 3's biggest problem is arguably that it's called Doom 3. If we define Doom as balls to the wall high-octane ultraviolence, then yes, it's the black sheep. But on its own merits, it's a perfectly fine mid-2000s fps with a horror bent.

By and large yes. If you bought Doom 3 expecting well, Doom 3, a sequel to Doom and Doom 2, suddenly you got off-brand horror shooter (complete with some early horror tropes like the whole flashlight/weapon issue, which continues to bleed into modern FPHorrors (hell, most don't even give you the gun anymore).

If it had been put under its own umbrella, or even a spinoff rather then attached to the main series line, it probably would've fallen on more welcome points.

Doom 3 was excellent game. it got bad rap because it was different take on but i also like it.

Doom is only franchise where each and every game is masterpiece.
