Proposed Bill Gives Obama Power to Shut Down Internet

The only real threat here is the number of idiotic sheep that are crying "OPPRESSION! COMMUNISM!!" and the asswipe conservatives who revel in this kind of fear mongering (you know the ones, the ones with the anti-obama avatars).

Reading through 6 of the pages in this thread I found 2 maybe 3 people who actually have a clue and realize that this isn't the onset of Big Brother and that the president has very little to do with this (there may be more, but I haven't the stomach to continue). That's really fucking sad. I swear, I should post a news article about how drowning yourself is the only way to fight the "red menace". Sure there'd be mass suicide by drowning all over the world, but I could at least take refuge in the fact that the more diseased portion of the gene pool has been culled.

Sadly, the only thing I've learned by reading this abortion of journalism is that the majority of people posting on these forums aren't even smart enough to wipe their own ass. Just pathetic.

Agreed, I used to be on his side, but after this, fuck no.
You do know it was senators who proposed it, not Obama.
In that case, sorry and I'll be against him if he signs it.
Agreed. Just annoyed when people blame the president for what congress does. And in all honesty, he'd at least be somewhat less stupid about it than McCain would have. Dumb either way, of course.

I already corrected someone who blamed Obama for the bill and told them it was congress who proposed it. The government being able to shut down the internet is still a scary thought, though.

Again, not quite as big a deal as many say, but power to shut off the internet is still a frightening prospect.

Th Government chips away at more and more freedoms everyday. Bush expanded the government by a lot and Obama has continued. The Government already can listen in on whomever's telephone calls they wish. There are cameras everywhere. If you want more specifics give me a little time I can dig up some more stuff.

And this another of the many reasons why Thomas Jefferson is our best founding father.

I don't think i've ever seen so much ignorance in a topic. Number one, two senators proposed the bill, and it wont get passed without several addendums to be more specific... even then t's really doubful it'll see the light of day. Secondly, the bill simply states that it would be one of the duties of the executive branch. This isn't some crazy brooding plot to disable websites that don't say the right thing.

Look, the government is cumbersome and frustrating at times, but I think a lot of you just want it to be scary and oppressive and sinister. It's so much less interesting to think of the simpler concept: two senators are worried about cyber criminals and made a wierd bill.

That's actually pretty funny. What kind of emergency would need the internet to be stopped.

Not an issue really... Obama and Dems tend to be more libel toward the internet and even gaming as a whole.

well in theory shutting down the main relay nodes for all US data-traffic would pretty much stop all of the US internet related activities, without those relays no data can get from the hosts to pretty much anywhere else. As a side-effect it would kill a sizeable chunk of the internet on the planet (quite a large portion of sites is hosted from the US or at least routed through the US).
Everything would probably slow down a bit until the rest of the world routed their data-traffic around the missing nodes, after which it would keep working, just missing a lot of content which was coming from the US.

As for the US nuclear stockpile, I assume those will have independent hardened connections, I doubt those are on the net as such.

"We're being invaded. Mr President we need you to shut down the internet."

On topic: will this affect evryone's internet or just America's?

You're paranoid. "cameras everywhere?" what the hell kind of statement is that? Like... traffic cameras or something? Ohh, bob we're looking for a guy living in new york who went to a anti war rally, lets have our team -watch every camera at every stop light and hope he passes by- Oh, and of course that'll be a team of thousands, as we're watching everyone all the time. Lets also listen in to every phone conversation in new york too! That'll only take hundreds of man hours per day, but thats ok, our government is paying our team of hundreds and thousands of listeners a day. That'll be great for our administration that only lasts 4 years!

Look, the fact is, the government doesn't have the time or money to "crack down" on individuals that are unhappy with the government. It never will.

Hard to believe that the founding fathers believed in what nobody in Congress now is capable of even comprehending.
Oh, I saw Jefferson quoted as saying that. My mistake.
And that quote is why both of them are our two best founding fathers.
