wouldn't it be great if the escapist ruled the world? Freedom and nerdiness for everyone! But seriously... The leaders of the world will allways try to control the "lesser people". And controling the internet is a great way to do so. Free speach and human rights are just in the way if you want to become a god...

Ok, you people need to calm down. This is what happens when you don't read through articles yourselvesa and don't fact-check. The Cybersecurity Adviser position, not the president himself, would have the power only to disconnect Federal Infrastructure Networks, if he felt the threat was imminent I.E. any government department, which processes the data of every citizen in the united states, could be disconnected if a vulnerability ws found that put said data at risk, or if the network controlled something which could be damageed by a cyber attack. That is all this bill does in the way of "shutting down the internet". Also, learn your own governmental system, for god's sake. The President does not propose bills, It hasn't even passed by congress yet, and you are all here accusing Obama of trying to stifle your freedoms.

@ssgt splatter: 1984 is a distopian book written by George Orwell which featured a soviet style government with total control of their people, right down to constant monitoring and "though-crimes"

Edit: Sorry for the rant, but it irks me when people begin trumping up rumors and panicking because they lack the common sense to go look for themselves.

Obama could lose all support I have for him with this. So far he has proven to me he is capable and that he is not like Bush, but this is going even further than Bush did. At this rate, the government is going to need to be taken down a few pegs and needs to remember the people are (supposed to be) in charge.

This is one more reason why I'm tempted to move out of this place. We've got a president who's barely out of diapers politically speaking, a congress that wants to cater to his every whim, and now they're chugging out shit like this. Orwell is laughing at us all.

That is too much power for any one man to have. If he gains such abilities, he, like any normal human being, would descend into madness.

MADNESS.

Is that picture supposed to represent the scary military cracking down the web? The guy has a toy steering wheel in his hand..

Is it me, or does the military guy in the front appear to be playing a racing game?

Also, I'm not sure this can be a good thing, I want clear definitions on these terms. "Oh no, I got more spam today, I'd better have old Baracky shut it all down to stop the hackers from killing more children." I guess I can understand how much damage a good cracker could do in even semi-important systems, but I think it's just a little too unclear a reasoning they're giving to hit the off switch.
Why are we trusting our Internet Security in the hands of someone named Rockefeller? Sure, maybe our steel needs, but not our internet, man...

Oh wonderful. Further means for the US to police the world and it's free speech. Security is pointless unless it guarantees privacy, and is paramount upon the latter being preserved. Governments would do better to act on the needs of their people rather than their own fears of the people's dissent.
No kidding hey!?! 1984 is ever closer!

In any case, it won't pass...plus, it's not like they didn't "check-up" on you during the Bush Admin...Obama is just being more overt about it.

I dont think they will ever shut down internet, very rare circumstances if they do. It would also cause more trouble than its worth, having to restart everything

I wouldn't support this, but I think they introduced this bill because the internet is a soft target and a pathway into major American infrastructure.
I think they watched one-too-many Terminator sequels.

That's actually pretty funny. What kind of emergency would need the internet to be stopped.
