Hold on, this means that Obama will just be able to halt the acess of Americans to the internet, right? He wouldn't be able to take it down on a global scale, right?

This is just another retarded example of America thinking it is the most important country in the world.
Many of the world's networks and most used sites come out of the US, so it may affect the average person's speed and the like, but it wouldn't shut the rest of the world off.

And as to the other part, what happened again when the US economy collapsed? The rest of the world followed.

*sigh* Hate to admit it, but you're right.

'Course, USA *is* pretty important on a global scale.

Edit: @Nivag: =D

This is all rather vague. What constitutes an emergancy. Would all isp and sites be down or just american owned ones. Really without more info it's hard for me to form an opinion about this.

this reminds me of the episode of robot chiken where terrorist capture the internet and bush (he was president when it aired) says "this aint funny man, give us back our porn".

No country is important enough to have any say in what happens outside it's own borders.

Well, depends. He certainly couldn't stop the internal networking of another country, but alot of traffic ends up travelling through America at some point, so it seems likely that shutting down the American zone of the internet would screw the rest of us over too.

Looks like they have been watching too much Die Hard 4. Hurray for ignorant politicians. Firstly, anything critical should not be connected to the internet, and odds are it probably isnt. If it is, it generally tends to be quite well firewalled, at least it was in any pharma site I was on. What they should be doing is making a bill stating anything important should be on a closed network, instead of some nonsense bill that sounds like a chinese solution to something getting on the internet the us goverment doesnt like.

Finally, the thought of a big off switch on the internet is pretty funny, the entire system was designed to allow of a comparatively small military computer network survive a nuclear attack. So in order to implement it they would have to install software/hardware in every single ISP, at a rather heafty expensive I would imagine.

Finally to top it all off, they want to protect there vital infrastructure, such as water, power and banking systems... by turning off another piece of vital infrastructure ? Are they idiots or what ? Do they know what damage turning off the internet could do to banking, businesses, science and society in general ? You may as well turn off the phone line incase some nasty terrorists are organising something over it. Maybe you should turn off the power incase they want to beat the president to death with a weed whacker.

The most laughable thing about this is, the biggest cyber-security threat is from denial of service attacks against critical business and government servers, so they cannot do business or inform the public. This was most recently seen in georgia when government websites were taken down by hackers during the war with russia. Hey, maybe it`ll teach those hackers when you beat them to the punch and do an ultimate DOS attack on yourself.

This is ridiculous. First that damn laptop-searching bill and now this? It's as if he enjoys betraying his electorate.

Um... I may be missing something here, but isn't the internet, y'know, worldwide? How is it even possible that they'd be allowed to do that?
If you ever find out, please let me know. I'm as fascinated as you are.
Yeah, can I have myself some of that answer pie?
Maybe their hiding the internet plug, or have all of the internets in the back room or something, I truly doubt that would be able to shut down all of the world wide internet, ever if America owns/houses a hell of a-lot of websites...

Yes, but consider this: Would that still be the case when/if this bill passes? This could potentially discourage people from using American hosts.
