PS3 8001002B error

So, fun thread, haha. I just bought the BioShock Rapture Edition (the one that comes with Bio1 and Bio2), set the disc in my PS3 - which has so far worked impeccably, as do each and everyone of my other games - and during the installation process of either game there comes this error message, (8001002B). What's it mean exactly, anyway?

Is there a way to solve this? Should I just return the disc, demand for my money back, all that stuff?

Interesting. I've never come across that before. Incidentally I'm using one of the first generation 'slim' models, right after the fatty PS3s were discontinued.

I tried looking up that code and the majority of explanations claimed it's a "dirty disc" code, but I found one site that I believe for some reason:

8001002B Filesystem mounting failed.
I think the first thing to do, if you haven't already, is to try and load (and play) other games. I believe you also should still be able to play Blu-ray movies or regular DVDs. Also, check your discs not just for surface scratches, but hold them up to a light source with the top of the disc facing away from you. Hopefully you won't see any light peeking through.

If you can play other games, I would exchange the discs, but I've found at least one other example where somebody had the exact same error as you with the special dual edition Bioshock games. There's some debate as to whether or not the problem is with the discs or the new super slim PS3s.

I believe the most common "fix" to that problem is to try and restore the file system. Here's one example [http://www.fixya.com/support/t3901893-games_keep_pausing_while_playing_tried]. Just remember not to choose option 5 once you get there. Option 5 is to reformat, which is a last resort obviously.

I've tried other games and movie DVDs and they all work fine. It's just this one Rapture Edition disc. I can hear the PS3 stressing to read it before throwing the error message on both installation attempts. The disk itself doesn't appear scratched. It does have this one little "stained / bubbly" bit, near the bottom right as held in the picture. Some red tint is smudged nearby as well.

Any idea if this might be "it"? I find it curious that this is the second Rapture Edition you come across with such an error. Maybe it's one of those instances of product recall. But I don't know. I'm not very excited about fixing the problem by restoring the file system, I'm very cautious about tampering with my PS3's system. But if you deem that the disk itself isn't the problem, I guess I'll go do that. What's your opinion?

Well, I've had (and still have) plenty of discs with weird smudges built into the discs, so I don't think that's an issue.

You said you have one of the latest super slim PS3s, correct? The most common symptom I'm finding online is something like a click noise, which honestly is quite disturbing. That noise has got to be the Blu-ray laser/mechanism going crazy.

I would get your money back and, if you still wanted to try Bioshock, get them separately.

I feel bad now because, while I didn't actually respond to your post about which PS3 games to get, I did think you would enjoy Bioshock. Not like this though!

Yep, super slim PS3.
Oh well, long as I get my money back, no harm done.
Thanks for the heads up though!

By the way, what does that exactly do? I feel compelled to try it out, but I don't wanna tinker that much with the core system.

It's interesting. The different restore options will perform different incremental stages of reformatting, with option #5 being a full format, resulting in the loss of all data. I've never tried them myself, but according to a PS3 blog:

1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
3. Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

Thankfully I've never had to do any of this as the only game I really had issues with was Skyrim. I simply deleted the installed game data (NOT the game saves) and unchecked all the autosave options within the game. After that point it got as good as I could expect of any Bethesda game (which is still poor), resulting in a crash only every few hours or so. Before that though, I couldn't step in any water that was deeper than a rain puddle, otherwise the game would freeze.

So if I go with #3 do you think I'd expose the PS3 to any sort of hazard? I'm torn between doing this as a last resort or simply exchanging the game. The problem is I didn't exactly buy the game where I'm at right now, I gotta wait for an acquaintance to make the trip to my hometown and take the game with him for a refund. That's two weeks from now, MAYBE. Warranty would still be valid though. But I don't know. I hate sitting around not doing anything about it.

Actually, I tried option #3 last night as I was trying to help another user on the Advice Forum. Nothing was wrong with my PS3, I just did it out of curiosity. There were no changes I could see after it finished. Only my wallpaper went back to the default background. Oh right, again, I have the slim model, not the fatty or the super slim.

Now option 4 on the other hand covers these changes:
Rebuild Database - Deletes messages, playlists, changes made on [Information] screens, trimming information for pictures in [Photo], video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information.
This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.
The thing is, everything listed under 4 is pretty unimportant, but surely there must be too many changes than they can list online, so I wouldn't risk it. I've read that people sometimes use option 4 for performance issues, but mainly with video stored on the HDD. I would only do option 4 as a last resort.

I really do believe it has to be a disc defect. Even if it is a super slim defect, you're only having problems with that disc, so in my mind it has to be the disc. Also, when you take into account the number of people who have a super slim PS3 that also bought the Ultimate Rapture Edition and have that problem, then consider who would actually bother to list a problem like that online (especially Amazon where sometimes fanboys lurk in wait), I would say that the defects are out there, but they're not super common.

If they refuse to give your money back, I would insist on an exchange at the very least, but experience has shown me that once in a while some games just ship broken.

I finally tried out option 3, "Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files". While the console informed me that it had cleansed all the corrupt data, the installation process on the Rapture Edition continues to err on account of 8001002B. Fortunately I talked to the game people over at my town and they said they'd exchange the game or refund me (emphasis on "exchange" as opposed to "refund", as usual), so no harm done except for the bad blood and the time wasted. I just hope the disk will be as unreadable to them as it is to me, once they try it out, and I'm hoping this doesn't hinge on whether they have a Super Slim or not.

Thanks a lot for all the time you took to aid me though, I couldn't have asked for better help.

Sorry that we couldn't get your issue resolved. Overall, I would say to stay away from the Ultimate Rapture Edition for the Super Slim. I would never try installing that game again, not even a different disc. I would definitely get your money back or at the very least get a different game because frankly, it's your system, and if they were in your situation I doubt they would try it again either.

I do think the first Bioshock would be a good game to get though, even without the DLC included on the Ultimate Rapture Edition. I've only played it once though, so perhaps a giant game like Red Dead Redemption would be more of a value.

Actually I got Red Dead Redemption GOTY this very day! Bought it out of spite, probably. And it works like a charm, thank god. I got it new for $25, which I think was an OK deal. I'm thinking, worse case scenario, if the other dudes don't wanna refund Rapture and insist I exchange it for another game, I'll end up buying my second or third next best option at a loss of $7. It's not that big a deal, I just don't like not being able to completely trust my retail. Or my PS3, for that matter.
