I think that rarely happens in the electronics industry actually, few components like TVs and whatnot sell at a gain nowadays. Isn't the 360 still selling at somewhat of a loss, or has it jumped over that now?

That doesn't make any sense. At least with consoles you make the money back on software sales. If TVs didn't sell at a profit there would no economic incentive to produce them at all.

You're right though, it is very rare in the console industry. That's why it's impressive when it happens.

It's the whole sell shavers so the mugs buy the shaver head stratergy. People buy PS3s at a loss to the company and they make it back in game sales, controllers etc etc. It has made me re-think the company a little, as I always thought them as passionless and without soul.

Now I think them as pasionless but with a little soul somewhere screaming at the background. Maybe they should just get into the shaver business instead. THE ALL NEW SONY PLAYSTATION 4 BLADE! WITH BETER METAL QUALITY THAN ANY OTHER SHAVER!!

PS3 is now more than 3 years old, so you would expect to cost of producing outdated hardware to be less. There will be a PS4 in 2012 so they will have just one year of profitable hardware production before they go back to making a huge loss on every console.

I don't really see how it helps, I purchased my 360 a year ago because it was far far cheaper then a PS3, and other then a tiny amount of games that look interesting that are only out on the PS3 I have no incentive to spend more money on another console, I think a lot of people would feel similarly.

Don't call me a fanboy, if the PS3 had been cheaper and had the games I wanted when I made my purchase I'd of likely got that, but it was much more expensive, and now that it's down in price, I've already got my 360, got a ton of games, and everything I want is coming out on the 360 as well, so why would I buy another console?

well... duh... I was simply pointing out that making loosing less money on each console wont be enough to get over the hurdle they set up by pricing themselves right out of the market, the thing was more expensive then some cars I've owned when it first came out.

this is crazy. i cant believe all this time we were complaining about how much Sony was selling there ps3 for. Cant believe that they were giving us a deal.

They weren't really giving us a "deal". Think about it, the PS3 was what.. $500 bucks when it first came out? But, the company was putting bluray, a new technology in their systems. From what I understand, the console was not easy to manufacture and put together when it first came out.

Sony is not stupid, if you charge too much for something, you're not going to see. Sony had to bit the bullet and take the loss until sales picked up.



I'm happy for Sony, but pissed that they came out with the 250Gig hardrive after I had bought my PS3 and for cheaper too.

The whole Idea is that when The then pretty old console PS3 for sony is starting to make profits
Whereas Xbox 360 has been quite profitable for a while already
So at that time at that very time when the PS3 is gaining profits Microsoft could boom in with a brand new thing that might also be running at a loss but would be big enough to wipe the ps3 off the map
Thus Forcing sonyto create a new console
Thus slowly killing off sony with losses and brand new losses and some more losses

It's a basic war plan : Crippling your enemies economy

These are still the console wars after all

Licenses to produce and release software on the platform, just as a start, and just within the PlayStation division. You ask this question and pretend to know anything about the console wars?
