PS3 Update Adds Cloud Saves for PlayStation Plus Subscribers

The latest PS3 software update brings automatic Trophy and online save-syncing for PlayStation Plus members and a streamlined media interface for everyone.

If you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber and have multiple PS3s, your syncing worries are over! According to the Official PlayStation Blog, the current 3.70 software update adds two long-awaited features to the PS3's roster: automatic syncing of Trophies and game saves to Sony's online repository. Regular PSN members can expect big changes as well, including recommendations on the PSN store, a unified streaming media application, and enhanced features on 3D Blu-ray discs.

The most ambitious part of this update aims to help gamers who have multiple PS3s or find themselves using someone else's on a regular basis. According to the Official PlayStation Blog, "A new auto upload function for online save data back-up will be added to make it easier to back-up your game save data." With save data tied to a user's account instead of his hard drive, switching consoles will be a breeze. Likewise, Trophy syncing ensures that a user's achievements will follow him, wherever he chooses to game.

For non-Plus gamers, Sony has added new features to the PSN store, the XMB interface, and the system's capacity for 3D movies. Users can now recommend games and videos from the PSN store to their friends via private message. Furthermore, the new TV/Video bar in the XMB brings together services like Netflix and Hulu Plus for easy access. Finally, 3D support for Java-based content, lossless audio, and 3D photos has been added for 3D Blu-ray media.

Not every PS3 update brings about substantial changes, but 3.70 looks like it brings a lot to the table. While PlayStation Plus subscribers get some cool features, this update has a little something for just about any PS3 owner.

Automatic Trophy Syncing? They want me to pay for automatic trophy syncing? That shouldn't be a fucking payed for feature, it should be a standard feature that should have been integrated when trophies were first introduced!

Hey. Still better than being an XBL Free member.

Anyway, what he said about the Trophies, only less rage-ful. Never bothered me THAT much.

Yea, I don't see that as a feature that will push someone into subscribing to Plus but I do have the bad feeling that any new feature they will add to the ps3 will require a plus subscription.

And how is recommending something off the store through private messaging new? I've been able to send private messages about anything for as long as I've had the damn thing...not that I ever used it for that, but others have.

I am really excited (that dripping sound is sarcasm by the way) to have a different place to click on for Netflix. I was thinking that having it as the top selection in the Video column was way too confusing.

The sad thing is that this is actually considered a big feature filled update compared to the crappy "completely 100% useless to the consumer" updates we usually get.
Why is ps3 support so lame?

That describes half of the PSPlus features.

The other half are largely worthless period.

Well it seems this update is perfectly on the right course for being another useless update. Looks like I'm going to be spending another long period time updating before I can even play anything, FUN!

In other news: this feature has been on Valve's Steam platform for over a Year.

For Free.

PS: On Steam you can share entire games AND saves between accounts, PS3 you cannot share games from account to account.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
do you really need cloud saves on a console? I mean its rather unlikely that your moving between consoles with a single player game

it certainly helps anyone who has roommates who own the consoles. for instance, my chick just moved in with me and was bitching about how she has to start overlord 2 all over again. woulda been beneficial to have this. although fuck paying for playstation plus.

I think the automatic trophy syncing being plus only is pretty damn cheap, but the cloud saving is a good plus incentive.
Most of the other stuff isn't even available in my region, so screw it.

Automatic trophy syncing is not even a service provided, it's just basic console functional. It's like having to pay for a subscription for your blu-ray to work 1,5 times faster.

I don't really understand this, wouldn't cloud saves be just as easy to accidentally overwrite as normal saves and why can't saves be transferred?

The stupid thing is that the cloud saving wouldn't be necessary if the backup utility worked at all.
Last time I used it, I had to start most of my games over anyway. Some I was able to keep (like LBP) but just not earn trophies; which I really couldn't give 2 shits about anyway.
It's stupid because I'd rather have a fully functioning backup utility more than trophies which are completely worthless.

well my situation isn't about accidental overwrites, it's about playing games on consoles in different locations. BUT, that would never be an issue if you are constantly synced with the cloud database, it's never happened with steam

I see, can saves be transferred? Sometimes I miss memory cards.

Well what I meant was, can saves (local) be transferred from one PS3 to another via an SD card or something?
