Pulp fiction, one of my favorite movies ever and a definite candidate for the title of one of the best movies ever. But what genre really is it?

There's not enough humor to call it a comedy
There's not enough action to call it an action movie
It's not really a thriller, nor is it a drama.

What do you think it is?

At it's core it is a crime film. But it has all those Tarentino quirks. Like at Inglourious Basterds core its a war film, but it has all the Tarentino stuff. There really is no specific genre to his movies.

A crime film

Although, if you're talking about video store genres...you're right that is hard.

This guy with the brilliant avatar sums it up.

It is at the core of it a crime film, but it has all of Tarentions (at that point) future trademarks in it.

I have an audio book of a speech Feynman gave at Cornell I've probably listened to it five times.

I love movies like Tarentinos that combine a ton of different genres. Also another movie that is hard to place in one genre is Fight Club. I mostly label it as a dark comedy, but there are so many other elements as well.

The good movie genre? Seriously why do people always need to categorise stuff. Just watch films!

EDIT: I'd say "Action-Comedy".

I tend to think of it as a post-modern crime film, for me the film which captured and encapsulated much of what was exciting about 90's American cinema and the highpoint of Tarantinos classic period (1992-96).

EDIT: I can highly recommend Dana Polan's book 'Pulp Fiction' from the BFI modern classics series.

Do they speak English in What?

It's a deconstructivist fairy tale. Bunch of Black Hats run into each other. The Wise Man sees the Light. The Proud man is undone by his Hubris. The Master and the Slave swap positions. The Young Couple meet the real world and reaffirm their love. And it's all because of the case of gold.

Pulp fiction.

Name says it all, really.
This is the correct answer.

Pulp Fiction - noun: fiction dealing with lurid or sensational subjects, often printed on rough, low-quality paper manufactured from wood pulp.

Pulp Fiction is pulp fiction in movie format.

It's a Pulp Fiction.

Pulp novels, trashy noir/crime/western/whatevers that were printed on low quality paper and intended for a mass appeal without being highbrow.

Fiction, a story not based on real events.

This is one of those movies where the title was very very cleverly chosen.

EDIT: Darn, ninja'd, and with better descriptions given by the other people too.

Genres shouldn't really matter to you. A good movie is a good movie, no matter the genre.
