I voted Star Wars, it was hard to choose, till I read that the question was "most important" not "your favourite" so I just went with the franchise that practically made modern Sci-fi.

My favourite would definitely be Back To The Future, also Ghostbusters

Who the fuck didn't vote for Dune? It was the first sci fi novel to be on the NY Times bestsellers list. Star Wars and Star Trek wouldn't have been made without Dune.

Wait... "Question of the Day" can have at least 12 or more answers to choose from? Then why are there always so stupidly few?

Star Wars redefined cinema when it first came out. It helped kick nerd culture in general back into action after the disco era by being an immensely popular sci-fi series with highly marketable collectibles. It pretty much saved nerds as we know them. Yeah, it's the Super Mario Brothers of nerd movies.

I completely understand the heavy Star Wars showing. I really do. I don't blame you.

But Star Trek was here first, survived tougher opposition, arguably reached further and touched more people, and produced several orders of magnitude more minutes of raw awesome such that, no matter which incarnation you liked, Star Wars just pales, in my eyes.

May you all live long and prosper.

Wow... a Vs. thread pitting Star Wars against Star Trek that hasn't devolved into innumerate hissyfits and followed-up bannings? ...huh o_O

There's a hundred other factors that could play into this decision, but since I pretty much grew up watching it a good deal before I was into the other at all, I'll have to go with Star Trek. Blame my parents for that - specifically my mother >.>

Sadly, Star Wars is probably the most important.

Out of that list, however, the only thing I would personally rank lower in terms of importance and appeal than Star Wars would be Superman.

Superman was the beginning thus, Superman is the most important. I'm not saying Superman is my favorite (I'm a Marvel after all) but even then my favorite from the given list is Star Wars.

But my heart is with Star Trek... Live long and prosper my friend...

Most important to nerd culture? Star Wars.

Best series beloved by nerds? Well, that's a different question...

Most Trek voters seem to be thinking of just themselves. Star Wars though probably has had a much bigger effect than Trek though.
