Haven't played a pokemon game since Red (unless you count Snap).
Can we please have no more pokemon themed questions for the rest of the month...?

....i actually base most of my decisions on looks in any game that has Unit Based Combat.
i like to look at what they Evolve into and then choose that, I went with Turtwig (i saw Torterra and went, yes)in Platinum and im gonna go with Cyndaquill in SS.
Typhlosian FTW

I go for end game cuteness, since that is what I'll be stuck with the longest. Grass starters are usually the cutest, but they look stupid when they evolve. That's why I usually go with the water starter or Typhlosion.

I didn't pick any of these. I don't care about cuteness or type, I care about how awesome they'll be when they're all grown up. Gen 1 was for either Blastoise (Cannons. That is all) or Charizard (Just looks that awesome). Gen 2 was undeniably for Typhlosion. Meganium is just...meh. And Feraligatr never appealed to me much, but I know how popular he is so I won't discount it. Gen 3 was the low point for me, I never owned the games but when I borrowed it I went for Sceptile. Gen 4 I only used Torterra (there is a mountain on it's back).

Usually appearance the first time I play, as I'm not sure what types of Pokémon I'll be up against and, thusly, which would be best to start with. Afterwards, I usually go based on what I know will do best for me in the long run, unless one of them is just intolerably awesome, so I have to pick them regardless of how weak they are.

It's all about abilities.
Hell, I'll be honest, I restarted my SoulSilver 30+ times to get a Naughty Totodile that had the highest IV be attack. If my Totodile wasn't perfect or shiny, it wasn't my Totodile. :D

I choose the fire type every time unless totodile is one of the options.

For me it depends on what game I'm playing. In Red/Blue I picked Bulbasaur for ability, Gold/Silver was Cyndaquil for cuteness, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald was Treecko for a bit of both, and Diamond/Pearl is currently Chimchar because I didn't know what the first few Gyms were, so I picked one based on a recommendation.

In HG/SS I'm picking Cyndaquil for cuteness. So I guess my vote goes to cute.

I'm afraid I'm a cute person myself.
I originally picked Totodile in Silver and completely skipped Croconaw (well, 1 level that went by fast) as I wasn't a fan.
However, Meganium looks much better than the disemvowelled Feraligatr.
Besides, I never finished my game with Chikorita.

I originally picked Torchic in Ruby, I hated its evolutions though.
Knowing what I do now, I'd probably go for Treecko though, as if I went for Torchic again I'd really hate to evolve it (I did delay it originally for a bit, don't think it was that intentional though, not on the looks department anyway).

How awesome they look.

So I Roll A Dice for rby and gsc
Than Pick The least fail looking For rse and dpp Then i Ditch Them For a poochena and a shinx respectivly.

Though i Do Tend to Go For the non-fire types so i Can get a Ninetales. (I know its not the best pokemon but it has alwasys been my faveroit)(I had proof in the form of a book my sister and cousins helped me put together that had a seciont of my favorite pokemon (Read about 120 Of the then 151 pokemon) And Ninetales was first Then it went in order number wise but the book (along with a machop card) was burnt and buried with my cousin.)

Why Did I Just tell you that?
