The poll isn't invalid because they didn't play the older ones enough, but because they didn't play them at all. You can't say that apple pie tastes better than blueberry pie if you've never even had blueberry pie.
Bingo, it'd be like asking which Bungie game do you like more. Marathon or Halo?

Most of the posters here are young and as such didn't get to play Fallout back when it was still new. If they tried to now, they'd probably hate them just because they're not all super flashy and shiny with the latest Gigatessafloppydoohicky rendering and are slow paced with a totally different feel gameplay wise. Isometric turn based combat versus first person shooty shoot, it's not hard to see why people today may not like the original fallouts.

It's a bogus poll and unless you can whittle it down to only asking people who actually got to play the series from the start back when they were new, you're going to get a huge skew towards Fallout 3 just cause most gamers haven't even played Fallout 1 and 2.

Case in point:

An OXM editor that refers to Fallout 3 as the "original" and has absolutely no idea who Obsidian is. These are the sort of people who will be answering this poll.
Umm... maybe he meant original because fallout 3 was taken in a new direction or, wait why am I defending that dipshit, fuck it he's an ignorant journalist and there's nothing more to it.

I like them there Fallout 2. It offered me up some major option-like things to due with my said life in the deserts of North Amuhrica. Like them porno celeb-rities and the good ol' slaver-ah.

Yeah i felt like going texas-style-1850s-hillybilly on you. But i made my point with it.

Bwahaha, I love how none of the Fallout franchise bastard children are mentioned in the poll.

If you know what I mean.

Wink wink, nudge nudge.

For me, it'd be Fallout 2. It's the only one I've actually played and finished. Haven't got that far in Fallout 1, got bored, it was too much like Fallout 2 (which I played first) and by the time I got to it, the graphics were pretty dated. But maybe I'll get to it some day.

Still don't have Fallout 3, not a big fan of Bethesda games.

Running around with various melee weapons (initially, at least, for the first few hours) and getting wild nut shots was so much fun in good old Fallout 2

I only played Fallout 3, so I can not really vote.

* EDIT *

Wait... why do so many people vote for fallout 3 if they haven't even tried 1 or 2. I mean I have only played 3 and voted that I am waiting for New Vegas only because im neutral, but voting for the only one you played sounds kinda unfair...
You're voting on what your favorite is, not which one you think is best. Theres a difference.

How can you say which one is your favorite without having played the others? You can't pick a favorite when you haven't even played the other ones.

Bah, such polls make me feel old.
Also, Fallout 3 is not Fallout, i thought everyone already agreed on it. Its just post-nuclear rpg-shooter that is simillar to Fallout :p

As for me, my favorite is Fallout 2, followed by Fallout 1, then Fallout:Tactics and F3 is on the last place. Only thing that made F3 playable for me was the modding community.

I'm waiting for Vegas but I loved three so I voted that. I love how the poll is making a giant middle finger type thing.

62.4% for Fallout 3? I'm quite surprised, and not in a good way.

I'm going to have to go with Fallout 2 for this one. I played it before I played the first one, so admittedly it's a decision that's been tempered by nostalgia goggles. It didn't seem to be the most complete at the time, but now that the newest version of Killap's restoration patch has been released, I think it goes above and beyond the first game.

That said, I'd still rate Fallout 1 far, far above Fallout 3. I'd never been a big fan of Bethesda games in the first place, and I can't say I was too fond of the way in which they included super mutants orcs without proper justification. Smothering everything with '50s references does not a Fallout game make, and I think they went overboard with that a little. I enjoyed it as an FPSRPG, but I did not enjoy it as a Fallout game, if that makes sense.

I suppose the huge ammount of votes for Fallout3 is moslty because for many of the people it was the first Fallout branded game they played, and they started gaming with 3d graphics and fancy visual being a standard.
Its hard to appriciate good old isometric view in such harsh reality :p
Still F3 lacked everything that previous ones had. Story, characters, humor. It was way too serious in showing the post-nuclear world and bit too far on the realism edge.

The guy may be stupid, but he will never reach the stupidity levels of the morons from NMA [http://www.somethingawful.com/d/weekend-web/fallout-scarleteen-armenianclub.php].

Fallout 2 is my favorite, closely followed by Fallout 1, mainly because I played 2 first and it improved a lot of things from 1 (like combat settings for your party members and inventory management). Tactics after that and then 3.

What annoyed me the most about 3 was how they changed or ignored most of the background already established just to get the enclave, supermutants, Harold, etc. to the east coast.
Being unable to make a non-combat or stupid run was also a big letdown.(and don't bring up the argument about voice acting to explain the absence of "the stupid". In the first two, most people would hardly if at all talk to you and the voice acting in FO3 is terrible anyway, so that is hardly a point in it's favor.)

If you read the news comments nowadays, you will find that most of them are reasonable. They still hate Fallout 3, but it doesn't come close to what I've seen in other places.
