If you consider yourself a gamer, you're a gamer. There's no test to joining the video game fandom. If you only play free games for ten minutes a week, and you consider yourself a gamer, then you are.

Depends what you consider a gamer is. You could have someone who plays farmville all the time and still be classed as a gamer.

Sure, you're a gamer, I don't see why not. Between Flash games, indie games, abandonware, and free-to-play games, there's plenty of stuff out there that you don't have to pay for. If all you're doing is playing demos...well, if that's all you can afford to do, then good on ya for finding a way to get your fix without resorting to piracy.

Ha ha, "real gamer".

Stop turning this into an indie kid fest please.

You know what I'm talking about, those kids who always fight about whose favourite bands are "real Indie".

if a person doesn't have much money to spend on games, and just borrows them from friends, that doesn't mean their passion for the games is any less valid.

I'd call a demo-player casual, actually.

Free games are also games, so that does mean a person is a true gamer. But in terms of playing only demos - I think those gamers are casual.

I guess it depends on what kind of gamer we're talking about.

If we're talking about just a gamer, then yes. Just play games regularly and you're a gamer.

If we're talking about my own little special ideology of a gamer, then fuck no.

Of course, it's a spiritual thing that isn't very reasonable or rational, but I stand by the fact that to me, a "true" gamer is someone who invests himself in games and the industry that produces them.

Saying a pirate isn't a gamer is the same as saying someone who downloads music isn't a fan of music. It's not logical.

"No true Scotsman would do such a thing."

This thread is such nonsense. You're a gamer if playing games is a major hobby for you. It doesn't matter if you pay for those games or not, it doesn't matter what kind of games you play. The only thing that matters is how fanatical you are.

Free To Play MMOs are perfectly fine as a game. In fact, some of them are pretty good!

Calumon: The Digimon one is pretty cool!
There's a digimon f2p mmo?
Yes there is! Do you want a link?

Calumon: Here you go.

Jack: Don't worry, it's licensed.
O.O OMG! Wow... and here was me thinking Digimon had died out years ago (im not saying anything bad, i used to like it). Might have to randomly check it out for the kids when im babysitting.

Gamer. That word means nothing anywhere near what it used to. Such a shame. Anyway you can be all moraly high with your anti-pirate BS but when it comes down to it gamers are people who play games. Whether or not they pay for it is a different kettle of fish.

I don't think it's right to make "Real Gamer" some elite title that has to be earned by playing games we consider hardcore. That said, I like coming up with any insults for pirates, so they DON'T get it.

Other insults for pirates:
Poopy-head
Patches
Half-Faced
Double-Dealing
Excuse-maistro

Terms such as "real gamer" or "true gamer" make me cringe. The criteria will be different for everyone. Sure, if you play games you're a gamer. Paying for them doesn't make you any less or more of a gamer, because the term gamer only deals with playing games. If you buy games, then good for you: you support the people whose jobs are to create your hobby. If not, then I assume you download demos and free-to-play mmos, or pirate retail games in order to play them, in which case you still play games, making you a gamer. The word "real" here is irrelevant.

Being a gamer just means you play games, and probably lots of them, just because I buy a game doesn't mean I'm gonna play it (which I know defeats the purpose of buying said game but people are crazy)
