Portal, in my opinion, is not an arty game. Its a first person game with some good visuals with an awesome gameplay mechanic, yes, but other than that as far as the question of is it the best example of an arty game? Hell no. Its just like any other shooter game out there, only not with brown and grey in the color pallet. Shouldnt even be on the vote.

Flower, Okami, SotC, all the usual suspects. However, purely speaking in terms of art style, I also want to throw Love [http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/] into the mix. I actually haven't played it, so I can't really comment on the gameplay or story (if one actually exists in the context of the game), but if the screenshots are enough to go by, it's certainly worth my undivided attention at some point in the near future.

Jade Empire. Because it's longer than Portal and World of Goo put together.

Still, I dunno if we should count JE as an "arty" game...

Jade Empire is the LEAST!?

Ok, I know Jade Empire wasn't that artsy, so honestly I don't know why it's included here.

But it was SUCH a good game, I'm surprised it got the least votes.

I would have to say Killer 7 Only because I felt like I was playing therw one of those really artsy films and to this day I still have no idea what went on in that game. Also some of the levels had there own aniamtion like one it would just be a normal cut scene with the in-game graphics wail on another all the cuts where anmi-style cartoon scens So that I voteing for it.

Brutal Legend. I just cannot help but feel satisfied every time I play it. And I still haven't finished it because I want it to last. The Ormagodden monster in particular is great.

I disagree with Okami as an "art" game - just because you can paint, doesn't make it art. That's just a gameplay mechanic, like considering connect-the-dots art. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful game and everyone has to play. Has to. O____O

I would actually argue that Katamari Damacy is the best example of an art game. It's got all sorts of things to say about our culture of Collecting Stuff and how pointless that all is. <3

And then, Shadow of the Colossus is a close second in that it's got a great story, independent of the "okay, what will consumers like best?" thinking that permeates most other games like a boyfriend who's clearly only after the sex but pretends not to be.

Probably Flower.
It's just so relaxing; I love it.
Dito, thats art in my eyes, but most games are an experience. But pulling of hard things in games are art to.

Depends on the person I was trying to convince. If they can't get the hang of platforming and don't mind a slower paced challenge, I would recommend the Myst games (especially Myst and Riven). If they can actually play video games, then Psychonauts.

Psychonauts for me.

It has a distinct design style that separates it from most other games, while also telling a very clever story with funny characters and solid gameplay.

I think "Shadow of the Colossus" is the best example of an artsy game. It's the closest thing to art in gaming... maybe next to Flower.

As for games like Postal, Brutal Legend, Psychonauts etc. better written and atmospheric and more immersive than most games.

Then again, games are art, so every game is a work of art :)
