Question of the Day, November 11, 2010

Japanese robotics experts from AIST showed off their HRP-4C dancing android [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105187-Creepy-Japanese-Robot-Can-Really-Dance], which we found was right in the Uncanny Valley. Is this thing cool, or is it terrifying?

Cool because it shows how far technology has come.

Terrifying because the robot itself is fucking creepy looking O.O

It's amazing how realistic this android looks compared to the ones of yesteryear. And how much better of a dancer it is too.

But I agree she looks creepy as she is. Not sure if I'd want her looking more realistic or more robotic though.

Why'd they have to vocaloid that Every Little Thing song? The song itself was good but it sounded like ass done that way...

OT: The robot definitely creeped me out. Didn't help that its proportions were all weird too.

if there's a robot apocalypse, I'm taking the japanese side, at least they can move in style while they destroy and enslave humanity

I'm honestly wanting robots/androids to look like this [http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_23rVW_6NwxI/R4Ahql7t-DI/AAAAAAAAB8Y/jvBfhqsg6Pk/s320/irobot.jpg]

I find it promising that someone could program a machine to imitate something I sorely suck at as a human being.

But still... dancing? Any progress at this point is good progress, I guess.

More proof that anime proportions looks very creepy in real life. Cool tech, no doubt, but *shivers* creepy nonetheless.

I know the secret they used. Within the last year they showed a robot that could do Tai Chi. When I started watching the video they're referencing I recognized almost all of the upper body movements as variations of Tai Chi movements. So I guess inner peace = dance master.

both I might like it more if it looked more like a robot (something like Optimus prime or the RX-78)
