See, in Ireland we just say "any news?" or some variant, placing all obligation on carrying the conversation squarely on them.

Star Wars is much better. The expanded universe is rich in history and diverse Alien species. Star Trek is some technobabble, with a bunch of barely different humanoids. Plus blasters are way cooler than phasers.
