So, Steam has a Mount And Blade sale on today 8-27-2015 and I'm asking myself, is ANYONE playing this series?!?!?!

There are so many other bizarre, no AAA games out there, some of which are likely terrific (I adored the Stanley Parable myself).

What very odd, not necessarily popular PC games are you playing? Why?

Yes, The Stanley Parable was indeed terrific. Brilliantly funny.

At the moment I'm playing the original Rise of the Triad, and that's about as quirky as you can get. You can transform into a puppy, there's a shroom power-down that severely distorts your perception, exploding baseballs, and Scott's mystical head. The unusually cheerful music fits surprisingly well with the ultra violent action.
I played that back in the day, original unpolished verison. A hoot. And, rather than G-d mode, there was Dog mode. Actually, both with great G-d mode sound effects.

I just got a bunch of Might And Magic games from Humble Bundle. Cheap. Need to see if they really are worth playing.

I still have some random stuff I bought from that Japanese indie game sale Steam had going the other week.

Got Machina of the Planet Tree which looks really nice even when considering it's made in RPGmaker, it's a pretty standard JRPG but with some combo based turn based combat. I'd call the combat Dark Souls-y, in that you deal fuckloads of damage in one turn but so do the enemies. Anything that isn't a boss battle will see one side victorious within two, maybe three turns. The story pace is pretty damn fast too, i've played it for like 2 hours and there has been like 5 boss fights at least.

Also because i'm a sucker for cheesy gimmicks, I got Love at First Sight with is basically a one route only romance focused Visual Novel where the main girl is a cyclops and everyone else is just a normal human. The art is really strange, it's really... morbid? Dark? The art is way more suited to a seinen or horror manga where there's just death and corpses and blood everywhere, you know what I mean? The art is the reason why I even bought it because maybe with this unique artstyle, the actual VN itself won't be completely awful.

It's at least passable so far, obviously it's no Grisaia no Kaijitsu (known on Steam as The Fruit of Grisaia, buy now beat the rush) but I wouldn't expect that level of God Tier from this game anyway.

I haven't played it yet but I'm really debating about picking up EVOLAND 2. I really liked the first one, except for the fact it was a whole 2 hours long, felt like a proof-of-concept(a fun one, but still) and pretty much just stops when you reach a certain point. All of the reviews on Steam are positive so far, but I'm hoping to see some non-user reviews as well before I bite the bullet.

Anyone played it?

You're pulling my leg right? Mount and Blade is VERY popular, I mean I wouldn't take a stab in the dark guess as to how well it sold or anything but it frequently hit the top 20 sellers on Steam many times. It's an amazing game and made even better by mod support (Try Floris Mod). It is far from the quirkiest game I've seen, it's definitely one of a kind though I really like it. The community for the game is very much alive and active still like most great games with mod capability.

I guess for me though the quirkiest title I've really put some time into (35 hours at the moment) and played RECENTLY is Don't Starve, a really fun top-down roguelike exploration survival game. It's popular enough though that is just now got a release on XBOX One, and even has unofficial expansions being made for it, very indie, very quirky, very successful.

Has anyone played Rollers of the Realm yet? It is a cute indie idea that works somehow (and won some awards if i'm not mistaken). Think fully voiced story RPG with multiple playable characters with typical levelling up and special skills. Except...it's pinball. And the characters are the balls. That you can change at any point to complete specific goals. The main character has a little pet dog that you can summon and it is a tiny, orange pinball!! I am not far in yet, but I do recommend it. Doooo iiit!

I'm playing Flywrench at the moment. Really quirky but elegant, precise and raw platformer-esque 'masocore' style game.

It's a little hard to put a label on it. Basically you pilot a little ship thing through super fast courses, avoiding crashing into the walls and performing a bunch of different acrobatic abilities to get through different kinds of barriers and obstacles. Simple but unique.

It also has a slick, energetic glitchy low-fi style and a rocking soundtrack by some of my favourite electronic artists. Very enjoyable.

Most of the games I play are pretty quirky actually...

If that is inexpensive, I'll check it out! I like shorter games as long as they were worth the price. (Games like Fallout 3 though, are a hoot too. Gimme something addictive that lasts a long time!). But I always love a change of pace.

I'll have to really check up on my Steam account: I think I have some Mount and Blade games I haven't even played! I can't wait to check out the Floris Mod. Thanks! But for Mods, I would have hated Skyrim. With them? Among my all time favorites. EDIT: And I've heard great things about "Don't Starve". It is on my radar. Thank you.

Probably Child of Light, I mean come on the entire game is in rhyme.

It's a little hard to say though as I play like a bazillion games at the same time. I got a decent chunk of my backlog installed and randomly pick one when I have some time to play videogames. I hope I can at least have a part of the backlog finished before I get Fallout 4 and No Man's Sky.

Easily Plug and Play. I'm not sure if it counts because I beat it in 15 minutes. That's just how the game is.

The game is more of an interactive short film really. But it's pretty funny and very surreal. Look it up.

You had me at "pinball" just like when I learned about the game Odama from X-Play...

OT: Outside of Hyper Princess Pitch, Monster Girl Quest, Dragon Bride, Touhou, Ponyvania, Skullgirls, and motherfucking Peggle, I got nothing... Other than that, I remember playing C.U.B.E on my cousin's PC, so there's that...

This Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom

I got this one for the name, but stayed for the steam-punk Limbo inspired puzzle platformer.
Also P.B. Winterbottom is a gentleman's gentleman, with a top hat and an amazing mustache.

Having never heard of it, I just looked up on Odama. Damn, I must have missed out on that gem during gamecube ownership. The reviews are mixed/average, while user reviews are kinder. So I looked up reviews for Rollers of the Realm and it bears similarities in the same user/official review score gaps. What is it these official types have against the quirky adventures of pinballs? Objectivity does not favour headstrong balls battling the tides of gravity and evil at once. What does it gain from this? Perhaps gravity and objectivity are both evil. Yep, i'm concluding they are all one and the same.

Either those "official types" don't see the in-dept/meta strategy that can come from pinball in general, which was a common thing in Odama that made the difference between victory and defeat (with the formal carrying the future of morale/supplies/soldiers along the way), or they have a problem with hitting balls around an enclose set piece... Whichever's the case, these kind of pinball-based video games can be a rare breed outside of them being attached to popular properties like Pokémon or Metroid...

Well, since you brought it up, I'm gonna take a moment to shill for two games I feel need more attention(I'm not in any way connected with either developer):

-Kentucky Route Zero. It's a wierd voxel game that could easily be called a "walking simulator" and yet, it's so engaging. You play a deliveryman with a dog and an old beat-up truck, looking for an address that doesn't show up on GPS. When you stop at a particular looking gas station at sunset, your told "You need to take the Zero", the Zero being an underground highway that runs through the caves under Kentucky. The rest of the game is driving around the Kentucky backwoods on a long summers night, sometimes on the surface and sometimes along the zero, trying to figure out how to reach your destination and meeting weird people along the way. It's also kinda surreal, with vague hints of the supernatural and ghosts but nothing explicit or frightening.

There aren't really any puzzles to speak of, it's pretty much exploring, meeting the strange people who are out in the kentucky backwoods at night and just enjoying the journey. There's a sense of magical realism to it that I found engaging. My only gripe is that it's still on episode 3 of 5 and it's been a while since the last episode was released, though little mini-episodes have been released in the meantime.

-Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP. It's hard for me to describe this. It's a hero's journey, done in retro pixel form, with a prog rock soundtrack and the characters talk in twitterspeak(Without the insults). It's only 4 hours long but what there is has a certain appeal to it(for me anyway). Among other things, part of your quest is to collect a series of "Not Triforce"s to be able to defeat a demon that haunts the mountains nearby, but before you can collect each one, you need defeat each one in a rythym battle, or as I like to call it "Fighting the Album Cover to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, complete with drug-inspired soundtrack". It's Simplistic, atmospheric, yet charming in it's own weird way.

Though maybe it's a game that only really appeals to a few people and apparently I'm one of few people who it clicked with, because a lot of people said they just couldn't get into it.

Hehe I was unsure of what term is best used for these people. Journalists? Maybe that would have worked, in hindsight.
They are a rare breed it would seem, two being the grand total that I am now aware of. Rollers of the realm doesn't even have the acknowledgement of its' own wikipedia page. Only a broken link from an Indicade list. Poor thing!

Journalist? Doesn't roll off the tongue for me... But, anyway, Rollers of the Realm needs it's own Wikipedia page! It's the only way anyone knows about anything nowadays! Odama, Pokemon Pinball, Metroid Prime Pinball, and even Mario Pinball Land has one!

And now I realized all of my wiki example come from Nintendo... because Nintendo "always" equal quirky... :p
