What is the most well know quote you know that most people don't know the origin of?
"I reject your reality and substitute my own."
Most people know it from but its a quote from the The Dungeonmaster
There is also a similar quote in an old Tom Baker Doctor Who episode.

In any discussion of Jesus, I'll nigh-on indiscriminately chip in with: "...who, as far as I remember was a turn-of-the-first millenium Middle-East-based magician and raconteur."

Most obvious example is "elementary dear Watson", which Doyle never wrote in any Sherlock story, and yet somehow, because of the movie, is the one thing everyone remembers about Holmes.

Or: "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds" A lot of people associate this one with Oppenheimer, but it is actually from the Hindu scriptures :p

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it - often attributed to Voltaire, who has some particularly awesome quotes of his own, this one was actually said by Evelyn Beatrice Hall.

This, but most particularly the line; "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum."

Which actually comes from the film They Live and was originally said, "I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass." Sooo many people don't seem to realize this.

Not really a quote, but something that bothers the hell out of me is that most people don't know that Land of Confusion wasn't originally written by Disturbed.

I even did an experiment on that by going to the video on Youtube and typing "[number of dislikes] prefered the original version". Got only a few thumbs up and a whole bunch of replies saying something along the lines of "what the hell are you talking about? This is Distrubed's song" so clearly very few people knew what i was talking about.

There was a badass-quote thread, not too long ago, when someone posted 'Vae Victis' and attibuted it to Soul Reaper (I think).
Which is sad.

While I'm not guilty of that one, I did for a long time not know that Johnny Cash's Hurt was in fact not his at all.

This was part of George Washington's farewell address, which wasn't an address, but actually a letter that he had submitted to several newspapers at the same time. To be fair, he doesn't say that you can't rule a nation without god. He says that the principles of government, promoting happiness, political prosperity, and protecting rights, require a citizenry with a strong moral development and that a strong moral development can not be maintained without religion. So technically, he just said the government needs religion, not god. See Washington's Farewell Address - Religion Section [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington's_Farewell_Address#Religion.2C_morality.2C_and_education]

One of the more interesting misquotes I've heard is the one about doing nothing and evil triumphing that is attributed to Edmund Burke. I can't give the exact quote because there isn't one. If you want a wiki link about it, there's this a law student's research [http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Edmund_Burke#Disputed]

Hooray for little known misquotes!

Which interestingly Oppenheimer states in that famous quote :)
