Rage Modding Tools Arriving "Real Soon Now"

id Software's John Carmack thinks that the company has "made poor decisions on this all year".

Anyone out there still playing Rage? Some people are still showing some interest in id Software's post-apocalyptic shooter, with one of them asking co-founder John Carmack when we can expect to see mod tools for the game. According to the man himself, it looks like the tools may finally be making an appearance.

A potential Rage modder sent a tweet to the game architect asking on the progress of the tools, describing the year-long wait as Rage would come shipped with modding tools [https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/260529465636040704] out of the box. The original intention was that users would simply enter 'id studio' into the game's console, and they would have access to the same toolkit used by the developers. Alas, it was not the case.

Carmack explained that the company's work on Doom 3: BFG Edition had delayed work on the tools, but he reassured that modding capability would be coming eventually.

"BFG work pushed the Rage tools, but Real Soon Now. I hope. Sigh. I think we have made poor decisions on this all year," he said.

This may prove interesting. Technical issues aside, a lot of the core gameplay in Rage is pretty sound; one of the primary complaints was of how the actual shooter sections were heavily closed-in and linear. Modders have proven capable of improving issues like this in other games, so giving them a crack at this one can only help.

Played it, completed it, uninstalled it, never looked back.
It wasn't bad by any means. It was ok...

...and that kinda irks me a bit. Why did a title from id turn out merely "ok"? So dissapointing.

Playing Rage right now,
Yes it's among the prettiest painted corridors to date. Gameplay is really fun if you are on your virtual feed.

So I guess the modding community can breath a lot more life into this and sort out some shortcomings.

Oh and yes, Carmack is right - in that admitting he was wrong.

Hmm, I might finally get this if there're some good mods.
It's a solid game, just some things put me of it at the time but with this even the leftover problems will be dissolved in time.

I played it on the xbox and really enjoyed Rage. It was a great, well crafted game, but it needed something for the players to come back too.

Unfortunately, because I was on the Xbox and the lack of any incentive (DLC) I traded the game in...

Soon instead of you being filled with rage, there will be a way to fill Rage with you! =D

Would be good to get rid of some of the past & forgotten rage over the game's Vsync problems, i guess :p
Seriously, one of my RL friends bought it on day1, and despite id saying the patch fixed it, to this day he STILL can't vsync to work right in it.

I enjoyed it but the ending was shocking.

Like the best bits of fallout except more shooter and polished. Think i enjoyed it so much cause it reminded me of fallout.

Needed a better ending though

Well I think any Id game deserves to have a modding capacity. I didn't enjoy RAGE, but they have a history of it. Glad they're getting around to it.

Maybe someone can remake Doom2 in RAGE. I'd actually buy it just to play that.

Steam Workshop and I'm sold. I'll buy RAGE if it gets that compatibility.
I got it on Steam as a part of the id Super Pack. I suggest not buying Rage for more than $5, if at all. This game has technical issues, the missions are repetitive -You will find yourself going to the same place to kill different enemies as part of the main quest, and the game ends abruptly, giving you no closure whatsoever.

I'd like to be able to actually play RAGE. But I still get hideous texture popping issues with it, terrible framerates, and my game goes all green then crashes to desktop every time I get to a certain point in the first bandit hideout.

So yeah, I gave up on it and uninstalled it. Lucky I got it when it was cheap.

Rage, to me, felt like a good concept that was missing the 'fun' element somehow. I don't think I even made it to disc 2 before getting bored with it. However, I think there is a lot of potential for modded versions of the game. Perhaps they can fix whatever was wrong. As an xbox player, though, I could care only very slightly less.

To be honest, id haven't made a blockbuster game in quite a while. I'd go as far as saying that classic Doom series was their finest hour.

But look at what they can create! Their engines are amazing. The Quake engine powered the first Half-Life, and is still the basis for the Source engine. The Quake 2 engine powered a whole host of late-90s games, and the Quake 3 / Doom 3 engine is still going strong as I'm pretty sure it's behind the CoD series.

As an technical masterpiece, the Rage engine is outstanding. As a game, Rage was... average.

This may be too late to create interest in those who got fed up and walked away, or even those who saw all the problems and never walked up to begin with.

That said...I'm glad to see id both admitting to the problems and for making an effort to put it in our hands. I don't see the modding community being huge or even big for this, but I can see enough people stepping forward to make this game more of what it could be; mechanically, graphically, and in gameplay.

I loved the AI and animations in this game. Really. For all the failings of this engine, actual shootouts with the bad guys were incredibly fun and their reactions were a riot to see sometimes. The only thing that made it painful to play was not having access to the higher quality textures without streaming all over the place and crazy stuttering. I didn't have garbled textures, or CTDs or anything, so I think modders can really make this game shine. Kudos to id for letting them do this, no matter what stage in the game's life we're in.

Rage was an OK game. Not great, not lousy, but mediocre at best. The shooting mechanics themselves were pretty tight, and the actual scenarios were fun. The story was meh, and ended horribly. I've played it through and uninstalled it long ago, this really is a case of being to late to keep any inertia going. There will be a few modders happy to play with the tools, but not nearly as many as there would have been had the tools been released as planned. Id really dropped the ball on this project.

Was excited to get it way back at launch, and then I saw a playthrough of the game on YT. Lots of texture issues, and the gameplay generally looked like a third-rate clone of Borderlands. The game engine was beautiful, and the environments looked nice, but I just couldn't get excited over it. Watched the ending and laughed at how abrupt it was.

Maybe if the modders put in some new missions or content, I might check it out, but (as Doom972 said) it's probably better to wait until it's on sale.
