Raiden Gets Stylish Sombrero Plus Combat

That's a big cyborg friend you've made, Raiden, but he may not be housebroken.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119082-Metal-Gear-Rising-Revengeance-Set-for-2013-Release], Platinum Games' entrant to the franchise, put out a new combat trailer for your viewing pleasure. Plus, there is a hat - and what a hat! There aren't enough superlatives for a magnificent sombrero which somehow doesn't tip off the enemy that the cardboard box in front of them isn't all it may seem.

Metal Gear: Revengeance has Raiden working for private military contractor Maverick Enterprises this time out. Though much of the game takes place in Africa, Raiden does visit Mexico, hence the Mariachi outfit. There's more swordplay than stealth, but Platinum is keen to demonstrate that combat is something it knows how to do very well.

It's all due in February 2013, but exactly when will depend on location. PS3 and Xbox 360 users in North America get it on the 19th; Europeans get it on the 21st, while those in the UK have to wait one extra day, before they get theirs on the 22nd.

....wait, you can actually wear that fucking mariachi outfit whenever you want? Oh god, the ending. I did not expect to laugh that hard.

I wonder how Bladewolf ends up on your side considering that you pretty much reduce it into a smoking pile of sliced up metal when you first meet it. Those 'mastiffs' look like they'll be difficult enemies.

So excited for this game. Day 1 purchase without a doubt.

This game looks like distilled fun. I just hope Kojima is involved as little as possible with it.

¡Muy bueno! ¡Esperaré esto!

Seriously though, I can't wait for this to come out.

Also, I apologize for my butchery of the language. My Spanish is worse than my English.

Hell yeah Mexican Raiden

The mariachi outfit was what caught my eye back in the first trailer and I was hoping they would let you wear it. I am so happy they did

Maverick Enterprises? REALLY?

Anyways, this does look amusing, but over, this is my reaction to the seriousness of this concept overall:

First of all let me apologise if I am being too anal or if I come across as some cultural reference nazi. But since we are looking at some culture specific elements, it will be good to debunk some erroneous terms.

"Sombrero" is just the Spanish word for hat. The large round hats (commonly referred to as "sombreros") are actually cowboy hats, you can call this a "charro hat", but not sombrero. The one worn in the game is a gala one, you can tell by its trimmings, otherwise they are plain. This gala hat is worn in a formal occasion or, yes, by some mariachi bands. Cowboys, also referred to as "vaqueros" or "charros" might wear some of these charro hats, but normally they'll wear a more American style one, like a Stetson.

Mariachi is a traditional Mexican music band.

The poncho he is wearing is called a "gaban" or "gavan"; depending on the cut it could also be a "sarape". These are typcally worn by cowboys while in the boonies to keep warm.

The outfit, then, is not a mariachi outfit, but a charro one.

PS - if you go to Mexico, please don't buy one of these charro hats, you will look silly :)

Actually, your Spanish was flawless on that one. *Gives you an A*

This. All this. I can't add anything else to this.

Although I understand why people call it sombrero. By now, the US is used to that terminology. If the title would have been "Raiden uses a charro hat" or something like that, people would have been confused. It's not correct but its understandable. :/

OT: I like the subtle humor used in MGS games. Like Snake falling asleep cause he's old or the guards running away from vermin. I'm really looking forward to this game.
And Bioshock.
*Sigh*

Eh I much preferred the game from what we saw of it two years ago rather than now where you can't slice humans because it's bad and slicing cyborgs is good along with select parts to cut at the right time and now we have a box to hide under for a game that's not really all about stealth like the previous mgs games.

I think I'll give this one a pass and move onto Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain in the future.
