When it comes to ranking games on these forums, I've so far seen three genres (action, FPS, RPG), and various individual series. So, with FPS coming round yet again (not a bad thing in of itself), I thought I'd get feedback on the RTS genre. So, basically, your personal top whatever.

Also some rules:

-For the sake of inclusion, I'm allowing games that would be considered RTT games (e.g. Total War, Myth, etc.), but not allowing turn-based strategy entries, which would be a separate list. Basically, the tactics have to occur in real time.

-Entries include expansions by default. I'm well aware that an expansion can make or break the core game and give a different experience, but keep it simple.

-Have fun. :)

So, personal top ten:

10) Halo Wars
9) The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth
8) Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2
7) Command and Conquer: Generals
6) Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
5) Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3
4) StarCraft
3) Command and Conquer 3
2) Warcraft III
1) StarCraft II

Post, discuss, etc. In the meantime, I'll start considering what genre hasn't been ranked on these forums yet (platformers maybe?)

After my top 4 the order is getting kind of random, but it's definitely these 10:

10) C&C: Tiberian Sun
9) Rise of Nations
8) C&C: Red Alert 2
7) C&C: Generals
6) Age of Empires
5) Stronghold (and Stronghold: Crusader, which might've been a stand-alone game)
4) Warcraft III
3) Age of Mythology
2) Age of Empires II
1) Company of Heroes

I think it's the only genre without any post-2010 games on my top 10 (although I haven't yet played SCII).

1. StarCraft II
2. WarCraft III
3. Total War Warhammer
4. Age of Empires II

These are the only ones I've really played to completion, and WarCraft and Age of Empires I usually only won thanks to cheat codes. I only beat Wings of Liberty for StarCraft II. Despite how it may seem, I do enjoy RTS games, I just get mentally swamped quickly, so when I lose and don't understand why, I don't bother actually looking deeply into the issue. I do want to get more into the genre, I do have the first Dawn of War, and have access to the first Halo Wars, I'm just too tired too often to devote the thinking power needed for these games. I try to be smart, but I don't have the stamina for it

Order's not exactly right, but somewhat approximate.

10: Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
9: Stronghold
8: Red Alert
7: Total Annihilation/TASpring/Zero-K
6: Homeworld/Homeworld II
5: Medieval 2: Total War
4: Star Trek Armada/Star Trek Armada II
3: Men of War/Assault Squad
2: Rome: Total War
1: Battle for Middle Earth (II)

Battle for Middle Earth II being my personal favorite in overall gameplay and design, while Men of War and Star Trek Armada kind of flew under the radar for most and are extremely underrated. And Rome: Total War was my first and favorite title in the series (modded that is).

Yes, Steel Soldiers was the sequel to Z.
I remember that red dude (robot) beeing slapped on cover of every magazine in my country. It was hard for me to distinguish it from C&C and Dune games tho :p

Hmm, top ten in order? I'll see what I can do.

10: Starcraft: Brood War
9: Starcraft 2
8: Grey Goo
7: Homeworld 2
6: Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
5: Populous: The Beginning
4: Halo Wars
3: Mech Commander 2
2: Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
1: Homeworld

I probably missed one or two, but these are the ones I immediately recall being the most fond of.

Have yet to try Halo Wars 2, so this list may change. Likewise, the new Battletech comes out this year. Granted, it's pseudo-turn-based, but it's still a strategy game. And, depending on how it shapes up, it might make it into my top five.

Regardless, I think this thread could use a bit more Paul Ruskay in it...

1- Warcraft 3 - I put so much time into this game. Just a great package.

2- Age of Empires 2 - Awesome setting, fun gameplay.

2- Starcraft - Fantastic gameplay, awesome music and setting. I can't decide which I like better, this or AoE2.

4- Red Alert - My first RTS, I'm pretty sure. Fun game, especially when they added the tesla units. Loved going around with a bunch of them and zapping all the infantry, haha.

5- Age of Mythology - I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Awesome setting, but it just didn't do it for me.

6- ummmmm, Dawn of War - Didn't play it too much. Only had the Winter Assault expansion though, would've liked to try it with all the expansions. Meh.

I haven't played too many RTS games. And usually if I have a hankering for spamming units and A-moving across the map, I'll play either of my first three: War3, AoE2, or Starcraft.

Yeah it had those red robots in it. I've never played Dune though, but Z was fast and the resource was time, it was great fun tbh.

I wasn't really into RTS games back then (especially the fast ones) so i had no idea those were different products :p. I can imagine it beeing fun after looking at some screenshots. I wonder who holds the licence for it now. Was it based on some existing franchise?
