Why not throw away that concept and allow the players to create what the characters look like? Have 4 characters that can all be customized to include gender, nationality, hair, clothing etc. Then when you go online, you just pick which one you want. That way it would give each player the feeling that anyone could end up being the last survivors rather than obscure gimmicky people.
