Salutations, fellow Escapists and musicians! So, apparently, I've been a good boy this year and Santa is willing to reward me with a new guitar! (By which I mean my family is being extra nice and pooling in for my present) Glee and jubilation aside, now comes the time when I've got to ask myself exactly what I look for in a new instrument. I'm open to any possibility in terms of construction, electronics, body type, materials, etc..., though I do favour a classic metal sound.

So that you get an idea, I currently play a Jackson RR3 (Pictured in all its awesomeness on my profile picture), 2 Seymour Duncans, rosewood fingerboard, alder body, Floyd Rose bridge, 22 frets (though I can do with 24 or 21, not a problem), you get the picture.

You're welcome to reccommend me any guitar, just to point out. Thanks for your help and opinion :)

PD: A few of the candidates I've got my eye on

My metal buddy plays Ibanez, but I'm partial to a Les Paul (or Epiphone equivalent). Don't buy any of that Warlock crap.

I own a Fender Strat. Love it to bits, but it's better as an all rounder.

I have a Dean and its awful, I'm really bad with buying guitars everyone I buy is just horrible. If you want something heavy, Ibanez is probably the best? But don't take my word for it.

I've always been a fan of the RR3. But there's one guitar I'd take over one of those:

Gibson Explorer.
They're great for pretty much any style of music. You can get a wide range of sounds out of them.

That, or there's always the Flying V.

Remember- you can never go wrong with a Stratocaster. That's the one thing in the universe everyone needs to understand.

If you want a good metal guitar but with a solid all-round feel for diversity, Ibanez is a good choice!

The Ibanez is great for metal, but I don't know how versatile they are. BC Riches have crappy build quality, stay away I think. Personally, I've got a Gibson voodoo SG, it's pretty damned awesome. I'd suggest you take a look at a PRS, they're always fantastic.

This. I have a PRS SE Paul Allender signature, had it for 3+ years and it hasn't gone wrong once. It was £549 when I bought it, not sure how much it'd be now. It's been tuned down, up, been dropped more times than I can care to count and still works a dream. Use it to play metal, jazz, funk, and anything else it may have to be used for, it's just fantastic.

I think I'm seeing a common metal trend in the models you're looking at: have you looked into ESP guitars at all?

Even the cheaper Ltd range had pretty solid build quality last I checked (admittedly, a few years ago now). Also, I wouldn't get too hung up on pickups and electronics as they're pretty easy to change once you've bought the guitar - whichever brand you choose, go with something where you like the body and it's been well built.

I've got three ESP Ltds (two guitars and a bass) and they've served me well for years. They also have a huge variety of body shapes / finishes / etc to suit whatever style you've got.

Personally, I found the build quality of BC Rich guitars to be pretty horrible, unless you were willing to shell out thousands more for the very top end of their range.

If your parents have all the money in the world (or just a few grand to spare) get a PRS Custom 24 [http://www.prsguitars.com/custom24/] or an SC58 [http://www.prsguitars.com/sc58/]. Totally worth it

But hey, even a cheap-ass telecaster can sound badass with the right amp settings.
