Have you tried Battlestar Galactica? (I'm talking about the the game). It's web browser based but graphics are on par with EVE's. I played only the tutorial but it seemed entertaining for the Spacer type. I myself couldn't cope with EVE's and X3's controls and the "you are the ship" game mechanics.
Something that blended ship design and construction with being able to watch and command every little thing (ship, crew, buying, selling, exploring, etc.) from a ship-commander viewpoint (first or third person) would be awesome. Upgrading the ship, making decisions and fighting wars or something. Mass Effect meets Deus Ex.

Yep Freespace 2 is the dogfighting/space combat game. Starlancer isn't bad but it doesn't play nice with modern Video Cards. GOG also have Independence War 1 and 2 which are bigger ships but not the free ranging trading game you are probably looking for.

The X games are good but a little complex, you do get used to it. I've seen the last 3 games (based around X3) in a boxset fairly cheaply in Australia.

There is also Evochron Mercenary [http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/index.htm] which I haven't tried but keep meaning to. It is an indie space combat trader game that looks amazing especially since it is a one-man developed game.

Hi. I just got a new computer after my old one crashed (you will be missed), and i was thinking it might as well be time to get some new games for it.
I really like RP-Spacer games, freelancer being a favorite of mine, and i didnt really like eve much (the aiming system).
Care to recommend me a game? ^^

...and here I thought you as the OP was wanting recommendations for spacers to hire/rent. Damn you, I so wanted to say "I know of a scruffy-looking nerf-herder you might try." DAMMIT, Joiny, I'm an Escapist not a MMO lover!
